I started my Software Engineering career as a fledgling C++ developer and quickly found that I really liked to deep dive into complex problems and solve them, the greater the complexity the greater the satisfaction as the problem was solved. No problem is to big, it can always be broken down into smaller pieces.When the first software bug was found in my work I felt awful, I felt that I had failed at a personal level. So I increased the effort that I put into testing my work before integrating it.That was however still not enough, it was difficult to test all the branches by simply executing the software and even if it worked now there was no guarantee that it would continue to work as the software evolved.Then came Unit Testing, it was a mixed blessing. On one hand it gave us the possibility to perform complete branch testing and ensured that the software continued to work as intended even as it evolved. On the other hand it came with a huge maintenance burden and made refactoring cumbersome.However occasional bugs still slipped through because of missing or erroneous unit tests, we started performing peer review of the code and the tests. This lead to huge increases in quality. Mistakes were corrected, tests were added, documentation was written and refactoring was done, all ahead of integration.At this stage we had eliminated most of the ordinary bugs, however sometimes what we delivered was simply not what was requested, we had made an interpretation of the requirements that differed from what was intended. We started writing down the design that we intended to implement prior to the implementation and put it through peer review where the system engineer was one of the peers.Now most of the bugs and misunderstandings are caught prior to integration and the quality is higher than ever.There is still more to do and I believe in fail-safe APIs and that the best bug is a bug that cannot happen, I look longingly at the new Rust programming language...
