I work in a true Agile environment, spending my time with complex SQL queries and scripts for ETL and bridging gaps where the software does not fully meet customer requirements. I work with JasperSoft for reports/prints/tags (Java comes in really useful here), plus the workflow and rules are written in Groovy. We use industry-standard tools including Jenkins, SVN, GIT and Azure (pipelines, storage, hosting and Data Lake etc). This is very much a leadership role, with direct and regular customer meetings, exchanging ideas with other teams, mentoring those in junior roles and above all, adapting to set examples, proactively lead and embrace change. The aim is always to complete and resolve, rather than accommodate and accept the middle ground.

An interesting and varied role - looking after our own infrastructure with a mix of Windows servers, supporting our internal staff and many hundreds of installations across the UK. I get to work with customers (onsite and remote) across many industries, with all flavours of Microsoft SQL Server.I get to see, install to and work with various implementation models. One customer with have a single server that covers all of the software requirements, others will have a Web Server (IIS), an MS database server (farm, cluster, standalone), an application server and a Citrix load-balancing farm delivering to the user-base. Some will have it running over IaaS, some in Azure, some virtualised and on-prem..Being SQL-based, I had basic company utilities for ETL but plenty of work directly in SQL - or self-written utilities that manage repetitive tasks using Visual Studio with VB.net being the most practical for this work rather than C#.

Responsible for all IT function within the company - supporting 70 users and providing bespoke management tools, reporting mechanisms etc. to a large number of corporate (blue chip) accounts.I thought I was leaving the main IT sector when I took this position - however nothing changed! I was still developing new applications, middleware and web-based solutions for my own company and to better integrate with our major clients. I produced an EDI overlay to their Traffic Management system, various profit-protection utilities (tracking non-invoiced surcharges, failed service refunds etc) and a highly-bespoke and very flexible Warehouse Management System.

GRL were a specialist software house, providing state-of-the-art subsea simulation software and industry-leading visualisation toolsets. My main roles were to manage our IT infrastructure and network and also to provide telephone, remote and onsite support and training for their worldwide client base - most of the clients being leading oil and gas companies. I was responsible for testing new builds, bug-fixes and updates and to roll these out to our customer installations.The product set I was supporting was clearly the market leader in terms of scalability and functionality. It also stood out as the products were completely designed and written in-house - no reusing off-the-shelf physics engines!This position also took me to places I never thought I'd visit, including Norway and Brazil.

Bat IT provided large-scale bespoke software applications for companies such as Mars, Remploy (managing the Workstep, Workprep and Pathfinder Government employment programmes), ICAA (SATS testing for Special Needs) and VTech (in the UK and Beaverton, Oregon). We provided IT support services for companies such as The Carbon Trust and Wilson Learning. My role here included being the software developer (Visual Studio, Metaframe, SQL Server, Lotus Domino/Notes) and also as an onsite engineer

My department consisted of the Service Contract Support Desks, the Senior Engineering Team (MCSE, CNE, CCNA), the software developers and the Solutions Sales team. I was responsible for all aspects of running this side of the company, reporting directly to the Managing Director. I was the Project Manager for all the large-scale installations and roll-outs, mainly delivered to blue-chip clients and local government. I also got to design and deliver applications to a number of extremely high-profile clients - one of which came very close to a Microsoft Innovations award.
