Profile bio

About Trish Karter

I have envisioned, built or rebuilt ground-breaking food ventures, including: Dancing Deer - early leader in the double bottom-line natural food space: lēf Farms - cracked the code to grow cost-competitive quality greens indoors, year-round, sustainably in New England; and CHABASO, a family company which needed an all-points renovation from Manufacturing basics to Brand, Team and Financial Systems. I have also assisted entrepreneurs and larger ventures building out their novel visions.I work as an Advisor and Board Member, while furthering projects of my own. I bring wisdom gained from a lifetime of wins and losses, mixed with street-savvy, rigorous analytics, strategic thinking, creativity & grit to create value and solve challenges. I respect both the threat of hubris and the power of relentless positive energy. Culture & team building is a core strength. I nurture critical and creative thinking, yielding fun and growth for all. It is always about the mission, business objectives and the people. I am generous, demanding and collaborative as a team leader and colleague.I have served on over a dozen Boards and Councils and contribute pro-bono time and energy to many initiatives. Creating positive impact is a life pursuit. I am an advocate for women in business and in sport. Personal BioMy most formative job was dropping out of college to help my parents survive Chapter 11. They pioneered large-scale post-consumer bottle and can recycling. I have been happily engaged with uphill climbs ever since.Years after earning an MBA I set aside business to pursue art. Unexpected events led to a return to entrepreneurship 5 years later and building Dancing Deer, brick by brick. I still paint and it is one of my great loves.BA-Wheaton College; MBA-Yale SOM. Honorary PhDs from Bentley College McCallum School, Wheaton College and Pine Manor College for my roles as mother, entrepreneur, activist, artist. In 2009, I cycled 1500 miles/15 days, solo, Atlanta to Boston staying at homeless shelters. At night I built Gingerbread houses with families in shelter then wrote about the face of family homelessness, advocating practical solutions. Dancing Deer donated 35% of its Sweet Home revenues to fund scholarships for at-risk mothers as a pathway out of poverty.Subsequently I became a competitive cyclist and hold Age Group Records for Mt. Washington and RAAM. Non-work fun is to be with family & friends, get out in nature, engage with art &music, sail, ski and explore boundaries. My children are my greatest joy and proudest moment.

It was born from a collaboration with Akshay Kolte and Alice Leung, recent Babson grads who had a concept for indoor growing in small-scale commercial and residential applications, After years of R&D this vision was built in partnership with Pleasant View Gardens.

I interrupted an MBA career for my first love which was art, thinking I would indulge myself in a year or two of painting. I was fortunate to have a modest following and a flow of commissions. But the business needed help and what I thought would be a few months of clean-up work at Dancing Deer turned into 15 years of enormously satisfying work.
