Visiting Researcher
In the spirit of the CREATE-MAPS program, I initiated a collaboration with Dr. Peter Lee and Dr. Chu Lun Alex Leung's research group at University College London. Dr. Lee has over 30 years of experience developing new imaging and computaton techniques to better understand the forming and in service behaviour of materials across biology, earth science, and metallurgy, publishing over 300 academic journal articles. Our collaboration has included three projects, and in each my main role has been integrating an inline coherent imaging (ICI) system into bespoke laser processing systems for monitoring surface and keyhole morphology:1) One-year visit at the Research Complex at Harwell (Nov. 2020 - Nov. 2021) culminating in a beamtime at the Diamond Light Source. I successfully integrated ICI into the Lee group's in-house direct energy deposition machine and used it to in operando (process running, laser on) monitor "humping" (surface undulation, precursor to cracking) and crack formation in nickel-based superalloys (IN718, CM247 and others), simultaneous with synchrotron X-ray and high-speed infrared imaging. This project was partly funded by and in collaboration with Rolls-Royce. Publication in progress2) Recent week-long beamtime (March 2022) at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory Chicago, using ICI to monitor keyhole depth, simultaneous with synchrotron X-ray imaging (at 140 kHz!), during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of aluminium alloys. LPBF was also carried out with/without a strong external magnetic field to study thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamic (TEMHD) effects on melt flow and keyhole morphology, as modelled by collaborator Andrew Kao (University of Greenwich). Publication in progress.3) Multi-machine study of the absorptivity of additive manucturing materials via simultaneous integrating sphere radiometry and inline coherent imaging, with Dr. Chu Lun Alex Leung and Troy Allen (Queen's University). In progress
Phd Candidate
In January of 2019 I promoted into the PhD stream, allowing me to continue building process monitoring and control systems for powder-bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing. I will further explore the potential of inline coherent imaging (ICI), an interferometric imaging technique with demonstrated utility for laser welding and micromachining, for PBF.
Nserc Create-Maps Cohort Member
CREATE-MAPS is an NSERC-funded graduate training program based at Queen's University that provides students with a comprehensive training in photonics problem solving using tools from physics, chemistry and engineering. In addition to an interdisciplinary approach, CREATE-MAPS aims to help students develop a full suite of professional skills to help them succeed in their careers. Program components include new channels for student mobility through internships, multifaceted supervisory teams tailored to each student's needs, learning modules that focus on problem solving, leadership, ethics and professional development, and opportunities for trainees to propose research projects and mentor undergraduates. CREATE-MAPS challenges graduate students to plan their training experiences to reach their professional goals, and to take on leadership roles within the program to serve their cohort.
Accelerated Masters Candidate
I was thrilled to join Dr. James Fraser's research group at Queen's University in the summer of 2016. As part of the Accelerated Master's program, I carried out research concurrent with the fourth year of my undergraduate degree, and then into my graduate degree. My research focused on designing and building a high-speed imaging set-up, and integrating it into an in-house selective laser melting (SLM)/powder bed fusion additive manufacturing system.
Summer Research Student
Over the summer of 2015, I investigated the circuital parameters of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) sensitized with gold nanoclusters. After successfully characterizing the existing solar cells, I optimized the annealing time and size/shape distribution of the deposited nanoclusters to elicit surface plasmon resonance. My research was conducted under the supervision of Professor Giovanni Fanchini in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Western University as part of an NSERC USRA grant.

As a Level 1 ski instructor, I worked mostly with first time or beginner skiers. This came with its share of challenges, as well as benefits. Your first time on the slopes is often frustrating, especially for younger skiers. Helping my students cope with these feelings and encouraging them to push forward was a big part of my job. I was able to foster friendships with many of my students over the course of several lessons, and saw their skiing skills increase dramatically.
