I DO NOT CHECK LINKEDIN MESSAGES - PLEASE EMAIL: hello@humanetech.comTechnology ethicist, systems change, design thinker exploring how we address the meta-crisis, where runaway technological complexity is exceeding our culture’s and institutions’ ability to respond.I get up in the morning to work with brilliant, passionate and impatient people primarily motivated by improving life and making the world a more lasting, fulfilling and sustainable place. I enjoy working with people who deal in the arts of nuance and precision and who examine the subtle ways the map is never the territory.I'm fascinated by hidden influences – invisible forces that shape human thought and action. Especially the intersection of belief systems, social situations, cognitive biases and cultural pressures that orchestrate people's choices and beliefs outside conscious awareness.

Spreading The WordTime Well Spent Movement Dec 2014 - PresentA movement to transform the "race to the bottom of the brain stem" arising from the race by apps to maximize "time spent" to instead build for "time well spent" – technology that respects and protects human social-psychological vulnerabilities. Our work led to Apple and Google launching "Screen Time" and a whole digital well-being movement from startups to big design changes at major companies.

Design Ethicist & Product PhilosopherGoogle Apr 2013 - Jan 2016Mountain View, Ca, UsI study how the design, affordances and choice architectures on digital screens affect users' behavior, thought patterns, relationships and general wellbeing. And using the intersection of behavioral science, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, habit-formation, social systems and ethics, I help invent and advocate for new designs that embed mindfulness into the screens people use.A career highlight was helping to organize a meeting between Thich Nhat Hanh, international spokesperson for Mindfulness and Zen meditation, and Google's leading product designers. -
Product ManagerGoogle Nov 2011 - Apr 2013Mountain View, Ca, UsStarted the Google "Reminder Assist" project, now part of Google Inbox and other products:https://www.google.com/inbox/#/remindersReminder Assist is an autocompletion engine for tasks, built right into Gmail's Inbox. My team noticed that many users write themselves to remember things they want to do later, so we built an intelligent service that shows fast auto-completions of tasks with 1-click assistance. For example, if you start typing a reminder like "netf," you'll see suggestions like ("cancel netflix", "update netflix billing address", "sign up for netflix") etc along with 1-click assistance – e.g. if you select "cancel netflix" then a 1-click link to the page online to cancel your service appears, along with the 1-800 customer service line and hours of operation. -

Mayfield FellowWikia Jun 2006 - Sep 2006San Francisco, Ca, Us• Developed Wikia's first ad server, responsible for driving all early revenue.• Founded, oversaw the high-level vision for, and engineered the support software for the Students.Wikia.com, allowing only students with allowed email domains to edit wiki pages for their local university. Also founder of the Stanford Wiki, our first launch site. -
Software EngineerApple Jun 2003 - Oct 2005Cupertino, California, Us• 2003, Inkwell team: Built innovative apps on top of Apple's Inkwell handwriting & gesture recognition technology.• 2004, Dashboard team: Co-wrote Flight Tracker, Unit Converter, Yellow Pages, and Translation widgets shipping in every copy of Mac OS X.• 2005: Invented the "Spotlight for Help" feature in every Help menu on macOS/OS X. Enables users to locate how to perform any action in an application by typing what they want to do (e.g. To find how to add "Columns" to a Word document, the user types "col" to see a list of matching options in the interface. As they highlight each one, a path through the menu hierarchy exposes the location of that feature in the app.) I have a patent from this invention.
