Kenflex specializes in the manufacture and sale of stainless steel compensators (bellows), which are fitted to pipelines to lessen the transmission of vibrations and reduce relative movement between pipes.I completed vacation work here between 2014 and 2019. -Product developmentMost recently I was involved in the research and development of the forming process for high aspect ratio, thin walled (0.5 - 0.7 mm) bellows with nominal bores between 40 and 65 mm. The stainless steel (SS 310) bellows were manufactured using a hydro-forming process, with changes to the welding procedure and an additional annealing step allowing for successful production. This led to the creation of a new product line for the company as these products were previously imported at great cost. The end result was improved profitability and turnaround times for the company.-Practical experienceI was provided the opportunity to accompany the lead engineer to technical on-site meetings with suppliers, existing customers and potential customers. Sites ranged from factories to smelters, mines, chemical processing plants and paper mills. Meetings were often held with technical, site personnel.In addition to collections and deliveries for the company, hands-on experience was gained in the bellow forming factory for the following operations: measuring and marking, guillotining, rolling and roll forming, lathe work, drilling, cropping, TIG and MIG welding, dye-penetrant weld inspection, plasma cutting, grinding, powered sawing, acid cleaning, painting and hydro-forming.
