About Troels Degn Johansson

Dr. Troels Degn Johansson, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Hunan University, School of Design, Changsha, China. Head of Academy of the HDK-Valand - The Academy of Art and Design at the University of Gothenburg (2019-21) (app. 230 staff, app. 800 students, annual budget app. 230 MSEK). As a Head of the Valand Academy he organised a merger between the Valand Academy's school for film making, photography, literary composition & fine art, and the HDK, the Academy of Design and Crafts with its schools of design, crafts, and teacher education (visual art and slöyd) with campuses in Gothenburg's Vasa district as well as in Steneby, Dalsland. With reference to the Dean of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at University of Gothenburg it was his responsibility to consolidate a fruitful merger and to lead the new academy in accordance with the Faculty's Art 2025 Vision--which among other things implies a co-localization with the Academy of Music and Drama in a new house planned to be opened in central Gothenburg in 2026.Dr. Johansson has been an Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Academy/The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, and Conservation since 2005. He has developed and led the implementation of a number of reforms of the institution’s design programmes. As a Head of Research (2009-13) he implemented the school's research strategy and organised a (positive) research evaluation in 2010 which lead to the accreditation of the school's Bachelor's and Master's programmes. During 2013-17 he served as a Head of Institute for Product Design (new research-based programmes in Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Codesign, Ceramic Design, and Crafts/Glass & Ceramics). During 2017-18 he was an interim head of The Royal Danish Academy’s Bornholm campus with its glass and ceramic crafts programme. In this role he organised its transformation into Denmark's first artistic professional Bachelor's programme (from 2019).Dr. Johansson was an Assistant Professor and Head of Studies at the IT University of Copenhagen during the instutution's establishment. Here he directed the post-graduate programme in Design, Communication, and Media. He earned the Ph.D. degree in landscape architecture with a thesis on digital visualisation and planning communication at The University of Copenhagen. He did the MA (cand.mag) in Film Studies at the University of Copenhagen (1994) and an additional MA in critical theory at the University of Kent at Canterbury (1993).During 1999-2000 he served as the elected President of the Nordic Summer University.
