I’ve been involved with a large non-profit as a servant leader and lay teacher for over 25 yrs. The organization is global, supports 1500+ local chapters and nearly 400K members. Their technology from the late 20th century lacked organization, security, and the means to grow safely. Imagine two servers, running 20th century technology, supporting an organization of this magnitude?Knowing my background in technology and systems engineering, I was asked to advise a way forward. After reviewing the state of their technology and software systems, we came up with a plan.Initially, the organization felt their problem was a database problem; that the database of old just could not keep up with the demands they now place on it. This was true the database needed a complete overhaul. The technology the database was running on could not scale for the amount of load they were putting on it. It was evident that the infrastructure needed a change and with that the applications that were serving up the data needed to be changed. Security needed to be baked in from the beginning and not applied as an after-thought.Today, we have built a new infrastructure that organizes over 400K members and secures all their data. To meet the demand of the members, we created the infrastructure in a cloud environment where the systems can scale up to meet demand and then scale back down to make the most of their donor’s giving. Additionally, we built a new membership website that makes resources available and allows local chapters to upload recorded teachings for their members. This website is currently supporting over 200k+ visitors every week.To date this project has cost approximately $2.5M as we continue to build new functionality into the website, adding new software systems to support headquarter staff with their functions. The end will be an organization that has gone through a digital transformation so they can continue to meet the needs of their members for years to come.
