The target for our research was synthesis of Naproxen in an environmentally friendly manner. Our research was to use retrosynthetic analysis to find the shortest and most efficient reaction synthesis possible. This led to research of the literature to find the step-by-step procedure of each reaction of the synthesis. I had the positions of synthetic and analytical chemist. I gained extensive knowledge of synthetic green chemistry and experience using analytical instruments (i.e. GC-MS, H-NMR, IR and melting point).

Using C. elegans as a model, our job was to take a bioinformatical approach towards localizing possible active sites of the Hp-FAR-1 protein of H. polygyrus nematode. PCR, plasmid cloning, transfection into E. coli cells and subsequent kanamycin screening was used to obtain cloned sequences for possible insertion into lab mice. Our end result was possible active domains involved in fatty acid and retinol binding. These results were then used in another research group to develop a potential vaccine against H. polygyrus.
