This project has been chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme as a model for Sustainable buildings in India. The construction of a model sustainable campus to facilitate regional village development programmes. The project is structured around two interrelated principles which seek to redefine a more relevant definition of ‘sustainability’ within the context of a rapidly developing but environmentally disintegrating modern India. Firstly, the concept of construction as a means of development dispenses with standard project management and contractual structures and sees the architects lead the construction process directly working and upgrading the skills of local village workers. Secondly, the building is a ‘zero-waste’ process built entirely along environmentally friendly principles using earth and unfired stabilized earth blocks as the primary building material together with a fully integrated environmental infrastructure including rainwater harvesting, waste management and renewable energies. Engineering solutions seeks to optimize structures with the aim of building the strongest forms with the least amount of material. The centre-piece of the project is a large optimized earth vault spanning 9.5m and 42m in length with a keystone only 9cm in width. Show less
