For this consulting role, I produced two memos for the Natural Resources Defense Council relating to the costs of electricity production. The purpose of the work was to create an honest cost comparison of traditional vs. renewable electricity generating methods.• Memo 1—Research project starting with data collection, standardization and cleaning, and finishing with visualizations and text explaining methodologies and limitations• Memo 2—A literature review exploring the nuances of system integration costs, and the degree to which they’re included in the reported costs per megawatt hour of certain renewable electricity generating technologies

I worked for the summer as a research assistant doing field data collection and management on a remote sensing project funded by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. I sampled forest plots and conducted a riparian assessment in the Mashel River watershed. The DNR will compare these data against findings collected through different remote sensing technologies. After wrapping up the field portion, I assisted in the post-processing of data and assembling figures for presentation to the DNR. This project will help the DNR to identify a cost-effective technology for monitoring statewide forestry activities that ensures sustainable use and healthy watersheds.

I work with nurses, doctors, and donor families to screen and assess medical suitability for ocular, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular tissue donation. The core of my job is to coordinate the authorization and recovery of those tissues and work to optimize key performance metrics that affect the quality of the tissue and the time it takes to get the tissues ready for transplant. The best--and most challenging--part of my work is approaching bereaved families in a professional and sensitive manner to advocate for donation, and to help them make informed decisions about helping others in this way. As you can probably imagine, we are a team of high-level communicators who are incredibly strong in terms of emotional intelligence--skills which are needed to equitably balance the needs of grieving families, potential transplant recipients, and the donation agencies and medical community. The coordination process involves complex logistics with myriad stakeholders, and I work efficiently and carefully to make donation happen--all while facing large case volumes and frequent logistical challenges.

Bhutan

This is a comprehensive job. To be brief, I work with groups of study abroad students, ensuring that they have a safe, productive, and enjoyable time during their studies in Bhutan. This is a unique program in that it doesn't operate year-round; our incredible staff of five restarted it in two weeks after it had lain dormant for nine months.My general philosophy is to give students the necessary information to keep themselves safe and healthy, and empower them to behave like responsible adults. I conduct in-country orientation and cross-cultural awareness training. I am the medical point-person at our field site, where I set up the site-specific student health and safety protocols. I am also in charge of risk management planning and execution for the program, and I brief students and staff on the proper protocols. I do extensive work as the student group facilitator, working with group dynamics and behavior management. I coordinate the community outreach program, making connections and setting up meaningful volunteer projects for our students to help the local community. I'm deeply involved in scheduling and program execution, and delivering the program on a day-to-day basis. I write and refine policy, work with trip logistics, coordinate with a large staff, and generally make the program run smoothly whenever and wherever the program runs.The job demands people and communication skills, cultural sensitivity, emotional intelligence, organization, flexibility, patience, the ability to focus on both the immediate and the big picture simultaneously, and minute attention to detail. And it's great.

Responsible for leading safe and enjoyable river trips for hundreds of people every week, making operational and logistical decisions on and off the river, and managing the guide staff on the river.

Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Lam Dong Province, Vietnam

Outdoor Consultant charged with helping the still-developing national park address safety issues by developing emergency plans for three proposed trail areas and training national park rangers and guides in emergency preparedness via a self-designed course tailored specifically to the park. Spent significant time presenting on how to best appeal to international tourists, and how to minimize environmental impacts on the park as it develops.

Dalat, Vietnam

Training guide staff in essential safety, rescue, and first-aid skills, through the use of both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions. Designed the curriculum and tailored it to best fit the guides' needs. Also provided English classes and tutoring and focused on increasing awareness of and meeting tourist expectations, and improving their general guide skills and knowledge.

Part of the team that organized and coordinated Admitted Students' Day for 150 prospective students and their families. Conducted in-person admissions interviews for prospective students. Reviewed college applications and essays, and evaluated prospective students' candidacies for admission to the College. Represented Whitman at the college fair in Pendleton, Oregon.
