About Ralph Allen, B. Sc.(Honours), P. Geol.

Adaptability to change has been a key element in the pursuit of new concepts. The proven ability to pivot to available market opportunities have been key to moving my career ahead.I was the lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) in preparing and then presenting material to raise $400 million ($Cdn) in capital for several exploration entities. The latest of these was Blackbird Energy Inc., where we raised $181.9 MM in a very challenging market. Before Blackbird, I was the lead prospect generator for a total of 548 wells, 74 of which were horizontal. My first Hz project involvement was in 1992 as an exploration consultant for Petro-Canada.

Listed skills include Divestitures, Land, Due Diligence, Joint Ventures, and 46 others.

In 2013, BBI set out to create the next high profile Montney producer near the Alberta/British Columbia border. We used detailed petrophysical and trend analysis to target a new area with over-pressured liquid-rich mineral rights. By 2017, the TSX Venture Exchange had named us the TSX 50 top company.During the early phase of Blackbird, I also taught the Shale Resource Evaluation course worldwide for PetroSkills (see below). Teaching this course, gave me insight into the primacy of liquids-rich production for capital efficiency and gave me experience in reservoirs worldwide.Evaluated fuel gas opportunities in the Spirit River, Peace River and Nikanassin. Created and had successful approvals for disposal schemes for sour Montney fluids. Also supplied detailed technical submissions to the Alberta Energy Regulator for H2S Release Rates. Despite significant H2S content, had success on all 13 Horizontal Drilling Pads with an average of 2.5 weeks per approval. This despite two pads actually being within the city limits of Grand Prairie. Key to this success was an open and respectful dialog with land and regulatory stakeholders. At Blackbird our technical focus had three main elements A: Liquids Rich, B: Over-Pressured and C: Multi-Zonal. I was part of the team to successfully take this project through the difficult early (Greenfield) stage. The project is now in the hands of Pipestone Energy Corp., which has very professional staff and is well capitalized to now move this project forward.

Priorities were scalable liquid rich or light oil recovery zones on large available land blocks. • Worked in a variety of corporate settings from multi-nationals to aggressive small private entities. • Acquisitions and Divestitures - used, petrophysical techniques and self-developed software. Some examples: While consulting at an intermediate - did a review of a large inventory of thin stratified Mississippian Carbonates in SE Saskatchewan. Key was detailed log analysis comparing Laterologs to Deep Induction logs in a Shell well with core analysis. Due to high salinity, the Deep Induction was severely compromised - BUT - the old LL8 (Laterolog) curves were usable and diagnostic. The presence of a nearby Montana oilfield that only had LL8 curves supported a successful re-entry of three abandoned wellbores with an average of 100 Bopd of 34 API oil. Generated a series of prospects including a Ratcliffe light oil zone at Hoffer that flowed 321 Bopd to surface from a 260 metre (853 foot) barefoot horizontal with acid stimulation. That success generated a series of over 40 Horizontal follow-ups with relatively low capital costs (barefoot acid squeezes).Coleville South Field - used petrophysical analysis and mapping to recommend a large 3D seismic program to the client, result in 29 new producers for Bakken oil from 5 previous wells. Created a novel 3D presentation and conservative economic runs for divestiture to Stampeder Exploration (Jeff Tonkin now @ Birchcliff). Presentation garnered an incremental 347% ( $83.5 MM vs original offer of $24 MM.) The field now has 247 wells (cum 12.3 million Bbls). Worked on implementing a successful polymer flood on the same field with a later owner.

Shale Resource Evaluation (Sre) Instructor

World Wide

Taught Shale Resource Evaluation (and Exploitation) to staff from Shell, Mobil, Aramco, Repsol etc in places such as Algeria, Kuwait, Houston, London, and Norway. The one week course covered best practices for evaluating, drilling and completing these challenging unconventional plays. Key focus was on techniques to identify sweet spots in a wide variety of settings using widely available petrophysical and core data from existing legacy vertical wells. These unconventional formations were commonly penetrated while drilling for deeper targets and considered unproductive until the advent of horizontal completions. Ironically, many low permeability and/or thinner formations in Western Canada and elsewhere would benefit from applying the same technology. In Alberta, in particular, these zones have often been surrendered in the pursuit of single zone continuations such as the Montney.Field examples from the Barnett, Marcellus, Eagle Ford, Montney, Bakken, Haynesville, Woodford, Bakken and other shale plays are utilized to illustrate optimal development strategies.Information and opportunities for international shale plays were described and discussed. Participants were given a globally relevant understanding of the critical reservoir parameters used to successfully predict a potentially commercial resource play.
