Tobias Harris is the Founder and Principal of Japan Foresight LLC, a new political risk advisory firm providing timely, forward-looking analysis of Japan's politics and economic policymaking. He also writes Observing Japan, a Japanese politics newsletter on Substack. His first book - THE ICONOCLAST: SHINZŌ ABE AND THE NEW JAPAN - was published in 2020.During a career as a political risk analyst and research fellow, Mr. Harris has earned a reputation as one of his generation's leading observers of Japanese politics. From 2013 to 2021, he was a political risk analyst at Teneo Intelligence, the political risk arm of Teneo, a strategic advisory firm. He has also held think tank positions at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Center for American Progress, and Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA.He has written articles on Japanese politics for publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, and the Far Eastern Economic Review, consulted for the Control Risks Group, and provided on-air analysis for CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg, NHK, and Al Jazeera English. He has also been an invited speaker at events hosted by the Economist, Morgan Stanley, the Naval War College, and the Japan Society of New York. He conducted graduate research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and, from 2011-2012, he was a Fulbright scholar at the Institute for Social Science at the University of Tokyo.Before working as an analyst, in 2006-2007 Mr. Harris worked on the staff of Keiichiro Asao, at that time a member of the upper house of the Japanese Diet and shadow foreign minister for the Democratic Party of Japan, for whom Mr. Harris conducted research on foreign policy and Japan’s relations with the United States.Mr. Harris holds an M.Phil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University.
