About Thomas (Tom) Litwin
Litwin retired from the position of Vice President for Education at the Jackson Laboratory in November 2017 and was appointed as a Visiting Research Scholar. In his former role role as Vice President for Education Dr. Litwin oversaw the STEM Pre-college & Undergraduate Education Program, Doctoral and Postdoctoral Training Program, Clinical & Continuing Education, Courses & Conferences, and Online & Digital Education. These five administrative units are supported by 19 staff. He was a member of the Senior Management Team and a member of the President & CEO's cabinet. Educational programming is presented on the Bar Harbor, Maine campus and at the Jackson Laboratory Genomic Medicine facility on the UConn Health Center campus, Farmington, CT, as well as national and international venues. Previously, Dr. Litwin served as Director of Smith College's Clark Science Center, a five-building complex serving as the academic home of eight academic departments, and 95 science faculty members. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the 500,000 sq. ft. Clark Science Center he oversaw a staff of 22 and five administrative units. Litwin's responsibilities also included fundraising and grant writing, including serving as PI on six consecutive, successful Howard Hughes Medical Institute grants. In addition, he was the academic liaison for a number of large and small renovation projects, as well as serving as the academic program owner's representative for he construction a 100,000 sq.ft academic building and library, and a 140,000 sq.ft., $85M Gold LEED certified research and teaching facility on Smith's Campus. Dr. Litwin served as the founding Director of the Environmental Science & Policy Program in which he developed and taught the Senior Seminar in Environmental Science. In addition, he has taught tropical biology field courses in Belize and Costa Rica, as well as advising undergraduate and graduate research.
