  • Plaor
    Lead Developer
    Plaor Jul 2013 - Jul 2014
    Boston, Ma
Plaor was a real departure for me. With the move back to Boston and away from consulting I wanted to try something new: game development. Plaor gave me the opportunity to apply my Java and Web experience in an entirely new way and on a very limited budget. My main responsibility was game stability and performance. When I arrived the team had little to no working knowledge of Hibernate or Spring, which had resulted in them requiring a quadrulpal extra large RDS instance to support 2500 concurrent players, as caching and transaction problems had been solved by turning off the cache and wrapping individual database actions in their own transaction. Consulting has taught me that all code bases have a story, and in order to develop trust within a new team it is important to make those stories your own so that the transistion to the new feels organic and owned by the group. For that reason, I used the strangler pattern to remove small slices of the code base, and demonstrate how the technology could be used to dramatically improve performance and reduce costs. This pattern is now being rolled out across the codebase, by all members of the team and I expect to be able to have quartered database costs.Plaor's small team meant that I got to stretch my devops skills, working closely with ops to build out clusters and create a more stable and repeatable build process.
