During my time at B4RN I utilised and built upon my wider technical understanding and expertise in the telecommunications sector, and applied it alongside a strong and capable team within the company and associated volunteer groups in the management and delivery full fibre into rural communities.As time progressed I took on the responsibility for the wider operations of the company, as part of this B4RN delivered a 400Gbps backbone network across the North of England to support its communities, and to provide further opportunities and growth to maintain a sustainable operational structure for the future.Further involvement came at board level, calling upon all experience and expertise in support of B4RN's mission: To deliver the best internet service in the country to the areas that are hardest to reach, working shoulder to shoulder with, and for, rural communities, to realise the enduring benefits of greater resilience and connectivity.

Since 2012 I engaged and supported B4RN as a volunteer, applying my experiences in the telecommunications sector to the deployment of full fibre in rural Lancashire. I then joined B4RN full time as the Head of Network Operations, building on the foundations of physical and logical network infrastructure to support the mission of providing high quality, low latency broadband to rural communities in the North of England.

I rejoined Lancaster University Network Services as the lead Network Engineer to expand and maintain the company's infrastructure. This involved upgrading the existing CaNLMAN fibre network to add capacity and additional links, again working with dark fibre at speeds of 10Gbps and above using DWDM to maximise fibre capacity across the county.The position grew to include network design of both the physical and logical network infrastructure, this involved budgeting for equipment that would meet current and future demand across the network and taking the logical network design through planning stages to completion.

I joined Lancashire County Councils Network team as the CLEO contract migrated from LUNS. My main role was to merge the existing council network into the new CLEO infrastructure. In this role I was more involved in the development of the edge network, its equipment and configuration. Alongside this I was the company's senior fibre splicer, connecting educational and council buildings to wholly owned dark fibre infrastructure. This involved working in BT Exchanges, council data centres and telecoms mast sites.

I began my role with LUNS as part of the CLEO network upgrade team, my main role was to install and maintain new technologies in the existing Fibre, Microwave Radio and leased Copper Line networks. As the role progressed I became more involved with the Layer 2 and Layer 3 logical networks, configuring and maintaining OSPF and BGP areas covering Cumbria and Lancashire. Additionally I became part of the customer service team and provided 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support across the client base.

I started as a first line support technician responding to everyday user needs from printer cartridges to email issues, this formed a base to gain knowledge in the running of a small Enterprise network. In time this grew into a Senior Technician post working closely with the Network Manager in the provision of infrastructure, software evaluation and deployment, Microsoft AD integration, fault logging and reporting systems, along with providing external support for local Primary Schools.Accomplishments include the provision of new HP core network infrastructure to increase availability and capacity across the campus, the migration of server infrastructure to Microsoft Server 2003, and managing the associated impact to end users.
