My Master's thesis at Kemira was about dispersion barrier coating for paper. I worked with the research team developing light weight dispersion coatings for food packaging applications, focusing on grease barriers. The job involved numerous tests for many coating samples, as well as the comparison of laboratory coating techniques and pilot coating. I gained extensive knowledge in the subjects of paper and board coating, packaging, and barriers.

My research involved finding a method to evaluate the distribution of PVA in the cross section of inkjet paper. A method was developed, and will hopefully be of great use to Nippon Paper. I was given a lot of freedom in this project, and was excited by the challenge this problem represented. Working in Japan was a really refreshing experience, and I hope to do so again in the future.

I prepared films of nanofibrillated cellulose, with or without a polymer matrix, for a research group in Aalto University School of Chemical Technology. I tested the films' contact angles and compared differing film compositions.

Most of my work consisted of operating the factory crane, lifting the ready, coated paper from the coater to the calanders, and supplying the coating machine with fresh cores. Taking samples and maintaining cleanliness as well as operational form of a blade coating station were also part of the job. Working against the clock was one of the major challenges. The job involved cooperating with the coating team of 4-5 people, including me.

My job involved assisting in the operation of the slitter rewinder. I worked in a group of 3-4 people.
