I worked with Prof. Patricia Tissera on analysis of the Auriga simulations, and the development of a neural network-based system for classifying the origin of stars in galactic discs. My thesis concerned the impact of mergers with satellite galaxies on galactic features, a proposed technique for identification of these stars, and the information we could gain from applying these methods.

I worked with Prof. Julio Navarro on the analysis of the APOSTLE simulation data. My masters thesis research focuses mainly on the gas and metal content of the volumes, confronts the Milky Way's missing mass, and makes predictions as to the locations of the metals in our local group.The APOSTLE simulations are a set of twelve cosmological-scale volumes. Each of them contains an analogue to both the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, discovered in an even larger dark-matter-only simulation. These zoom-in volumes allow us to observe the evolution of structures that are very similar to our own cosmic home.The size of the data sets means that my analysis requires extensive use of efficient numerical techniques, primarily written in C(++) or Python. This not only presents a challenge as far as loading and computing with the data, but also with presenting my analysis in intuitive and meaningful ways.

As a graduate student, I also work as a lab instructor/TA for various courses offered by the physics department. I worked with multiple classes of up to 25 undergraduates, instructed them in physics and laboratory procedure, and offered advice and help over the lab period. I also marked the completed labs, and had to give helpful feedback to the students to prepare them for later work.

Research Assistant to Professor Giulia Galli, who leads a group involved in the theoretical and computational modelling of materials, including solids, liquids and nanostructures in order to understand and predict their properties. I was working directly with Dr. Marco Govoni, a postdoctoral researcher who has created a multi-electron perturbation program called WEST (www.west-code.org). This code runs alongside a density functional theory program called PW, and by considering electron-electron interactions as small perturbations to a system that originally has none, can greatly improve results.My role was writing Python code to run PW and WEST for over a hundred configurations to test the performance of the system.I gained experience with using the Midway supercomputer at UChicago, along with running the programs on the MIRA supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory.
