Tula Organic is a successful, award-winning, established (> 10 years) hair salon, but also has functioned as a test bed for business improvement through design and data driven strategic thinking. I have built this business from the ground up, from an under-staffed, break-even operation, into an organization capable of producing half a million dollars in sales for the year. This was done with clear and consistent branding, but also through the synthesis of business generated data to improve processes, make predictions, and serve customers. This includes budgeting and forecasting, risk management, and marketing / sales analysis. As the data has evolved over time, so too have our responses to client demands and current market conditions. Throughout all of this I have intimate daily contact with the operational complexities of running a small business, from matching my coaching style to an individual stylist's learning needs, to tactfully navigating the rare displeased client, to strategic hiring of staff, to emergency planning when an old commercial building is without internet / electricity / or hot water. It cannot be overstated: the breadth of wisdom, experience, and life lessons that small business ownership will force upon you over the course of ten years… This has also made me more capable and efficient in my other work (design consulting), and generally a better human being. The post-COVID environment has produced a new set of obstacles to small businesses from increased costs, to staffing challenges, to reduced client spending capabilities. I look forward to utilizing my background in design and technology, and my front line experience in business management to rise to meet these new opportunities.

Responsible for the user experience design of the software that Five Star builds for its clients. As the only interaction designer at this small firm, I remained involved throughout the entire software development lifecycle. For me, a typical project lifecycle at Five Star involved the following high-level steps:1. Meet with our CEO and client stakeholders to discuss system requirements.2. Build wireframes in Adobe Illustrator to demonstrate high-level functionality. (For a complex system, I would start with a process diagram.)3. Discuss wireframes with client.4. Create mockups to demonstrate detailed functionality and to establish application look and feel.5. Discuss mockups with client. (For a complex system, I would create a prototype at this point.)6. Create a requirements document and style guide for our development team.7. Assist in application testing, bug documentation, and XHTML / CSS cleanup.
