During my candidacy I came to realise my passion for commercial and litigious work. This in turn led to my decision to undertake a pupillage in 2023. In the meantime I intend on gaining further experience in administrative, competition and related Constitutional law. My interest in regulatory and administrative law arose even before I had undertaken the course during my LLB, but rather from my experience as the sole student representative on the UCT LLB accreditation task team in 2018. During which time, I was able to review the administrative decisions taken within my faculty. My accounting education (BCom Economics with Law, 2017) assisted in this regard because it allowed me to easily identify and understand the irregularities between the faculty policies, the faculty’s decisions and the financial statements presented to Faculty Council and the task team, in relation to the faculty’s legislative obligations as a state institution. This experience demonstrated the severe gaps in the support needed by historically disadvantaged groups and led me to co-found and chair the UCT BLA Student Chapter and create the Student Advocacy Programme (representing under- and post-graduate students with academic, housing, financial and discriminatory matters against their respective faculties), and African Student Support Programme. Similarly, my experience in the Public Interest Litigation and Commercial Regulatory Teams at Webbers, where we investigated and litigated or advised on multiple Energy Procurement cases and regulatory compliance matters on behalf of clients (including in due diligences). These experiences furthered my interests in compliance law but also litigious and advisory work in regulatory, administrative and constitutional matters. I have always been able to balance my principal work with extra activities and leadership commitments and I intend on showing the same dedication and effectiveness to my clients and the company I represent. I truly seek to be challenged by my work, as due to the COVID-19 Lockdowns the work available to juniors at Webbers was minimal and which meant my training was lacking in terms of the intensity of work, exposure to a variety of matters and inter-personal training on soft-skills. I hope to gain these skills under the mentorship of my principal attorney or counsel I may work with in future. I tend to perform my best the busier I am and I have been so my whole life, hence I have been elected into several representative positions throughout my life whilst maintaining my academic or professional standing.
