Tijdens mijn promotie heb ik berekeningen gedaan aan complexen van nucleobasen met metaal-ionen. De berekeningen waren op basis van dichtheidsfunctionaaltheorie (DFT). De projecten omvatten:1. Waterstof bruggen berekenen met B3LYP. B3LYP wordt voor diverse chemische problemen gebruikt. Maar de vraag rees of B3LYP wel een goede functionaal is, om H-bruggen te beschrijven. 2. Stabilisatie van zeldzame tautomeren. Binding van metaal-ionen aan nucleobasen kan ervoor zorgen, dat er een zeldzame tautomeer wordt gestabiliseerd. Dit kan ertoe leiden, dat er een mutatie in ons DNA plaatsvind. Uiteindelijk kan dit (fatale) gevolgen hebben voor het functioneren van onze eiwitten. 3. Adenine kwartetten, en hun interactie met halogenide-ionen. Omdat de nucleobase een NH2 groep heeft, kan deze interactie hebben met anionen van halogenen. 4. Stapel complex van G4-Na+-Cl--A4. Cationen stabiliseren guanine kwartetten (G4), Halogeniden stabiliseren adenine kwartetten (A4) stabiliseren. Kortom, dan zou het ook mogelijk moeten zijn om NaCl te plaatsen tussen een G4 en een A4. Dat is gelukt, en is gepubliceerd in de Angewandte Chemie. Op 16 oktober 2009 was mijn verdediging, met succes. Ik behaalde het predicaat "gut".

Als promovendus werkte ik aan de TU Dortmund en de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. Echter, financiering werd mogelijk gemaakt door het Max Planck instituut. Hier volgde ik ook colleges over Moleculaire Biologie, en kwam ik naar workshops. Ieder jaar was er een conferentie, ik ben in Jena, Potsdam en Tegern am See geweest.
