About Louise Howson
I have over ten years of teaching experience within the Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) sectors which included the responsibility of leading two HE programmes. Within this time, I developed the programmes to become more learner focused through the remodelling and creation of new units and adaptation of assessment methods. With a keen interest in using learning technology to aid teaching practice, I facilitated staff development events within this field which led me to pursue a career in staff development. Now as an Educational Developer at The University of Bristol, am currently designing and delivering programmes for Postgraduate Researchers with teaching responsibilities to support their development. I am also undertaking some research funded by the Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching to explore how PGRs find their teaching style.
Listed skills include Sports Therapy, Kinesio Taping, College Teaching, University Teaching, and 25 others.

Lecturer In Academic Development
Educational Developer
Within Academic Staff Development I am involved in projects that develop the learning and teaching skills of Postgraduate researchers (PGRs) with teaching responsibilities. This includes the delivery of the mandatory Starting to Teach sessions, the development and delivery of the ‘Beyond Starting to Teach’ programme and the facilitation of the ‘CREATE for PGRs’ scheme which is being piloted this academic year. I facilitate sessions on lecturing and small group teaching for researchers with teaching roles and also hold monthly informal “Teaching Bites” sessions on learning and teaching themes for academics who teach.Exploring how teachers (and especially PGRS) find their own teaching style has been an interest of mine due to my own struggles finding my identity as a teacher when I first started teaching in 2004. The process of discovering what works for you as a teacher (and your students) inspired me to apply for a Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching (BILT) grant to fund a research project in this area which I secured in July 2016. This project titled “Finding your teaching voice: Experienced of Postgraduate students who teach” takes the form of semi-structured interviews with PGRs at various stages of their teaching “career” with questions based on previous research regarding self-efficacy, role conflicts, developing confidence and overcoming anxiety.
Programme Leader
As a grade 1 lecturer within Swindon College, I delivered inspiring and interactive lessons and was involved in lesson studies to improve teaching practice across the College. My role as a Learning Technology (LT) Inspirer enabled me to share good practice to lecturers and fellow Inspirers about new teaching and learning tools as well as deliver staff development activities to encourage the use of LT within teaching sessions. My role as a programme leader and lecturer included the following responsibilities:• Continuous monitoring the quality of course delivery, through student tracking and analysis of retention and achievement data.• The collection and evaluation of information related to performance indicators relevant to the team and use of the outcomes to inform planning for continuous improvement.• Monitoring the setting, supervision and assessment of students’ work and checking the quality of the feedback provided to them including internal verification.• Organising team meetings on a regular basis to ensure adequate planning, effective communication and review of activities and the completion of the Team Review and Self Assessment process.• Partaking in and conducting the Professional Development Review (PDR) in accordance with College policy.• Working closely with stakeholders to continually review and develop course delivery, maintain academic standards and share good practice through attending Curriculum Working Groups, Programme Committee Meetings, Staff Student Liaison Committees as well as Unit and Programme Exam Boards.• Planning, delivering and evaluating lesson plans and schemes of work for varying units from level 2 to level 6. • Providing pastoral care to students through group and one to one tutorials.
Sports Therapist
• Delivering timely, safe and appropriate treatments to athletes under extreme time constraints both on and off the field of play.• Orchestrating injury prevention strategies for athletes.• Planning suitable and specific rehabilitation programmes for athletes.• Treating international standard athletes.• Maintaining professional standards and updating skills.• The application of varying treatment methods including sports massage, peripheral and spinal mobilisations, electrotherapy, McConnell taping, first aid and rehabilitative exercise.
