I coordinated the climate-change related activities of the Citizens’ Global Platform project. The overall goal of the platform was to empower marginalized groups in four countries (Brazil, India, Tanzania and Finland) on four continents and to create new mechanisms for citizen participation in international political processes. As part of the project several workshops in Tanzania, Us and Sweden were organised. I introduced the issue of climate change to the agenda of the platform. As the last task of my assignment, I wrote an application to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland on funding for the next, climate-focused phase of the platform. The application led to a three-year, four-country-wide, climate program coordinated by the UN Association of Finland.

The objective of the Sinsibere project is to protect the fragile savannah area around the capital of Mali, Bamako. The main local environmental threat is the cutting down and selling of wood by the women living in villages around Bamako. The project has developed new income-generating methods for the women who used to be forced to sell wood. During the initial phases of the project, a successful microcredit system for women was created together with women’s associations in 12 villages. In 2006, a cooperative was founded in the village of Bougoula. The cooperative is engaged in the product development, marketing and logistics of high quality shea butter. During the project, more than 10 000 women have been part of the project’s activities, wood cutting has been reduced, and women have been elected to the board of municipality leadersfor the first time.
