About Thomas Leavitt
Consulting @ 880 IT Services: I am looking for new clients, and to advise small startups on a part-time basis (perhaps even for equity only). Recruiters: I am NOT looking for a full-time W2 or contract position (no commitments over 20 hours a week for a sustained period). I am NOT looking to work anywhere outside of California other than for a very short term (ten days or less) assignment. Rates: $180/hr., a bargain for someone with 27+ years of high level professional experience.I founded 880 IT Services, LLC in 2001. I've worked for a broad variety of clients, big and small, but my bread and butter is acting as a "IT guru" for small to medium-sized enterprises (up to about a hundred employees). I'm a jack of all trades, master of more than a few. If it's tech, I can make it work - from copiers to phone systems, networks to storage and virtualization. Unix, Linux, Windows, OS X, Android, iOS... on the desktop, on the server, in the cloud, on your phone, it won't phase me.I assembled my first PC XT from parts bought at LA area swap meets when I was in high school, in the late 1980s. I acted as the Senior Unix/Linux Systems Administrator for two companies I founded in May of 1994 and September of 1999: Web Communications, LLC (acquired by Verio in February of 1999) and TargetFirst, Inc. (aka ClickRebates.com). Along the way, I also created one of the first web sites on the Internet (and one of a much smaller number that has been in continual operation), The Gnosis Archive (sometime in 1993).To re-emphasize: I'm primarily interested in adding to my company's client base via part-time (ongoing) and/or short-term consulting/contracting opportunities. It would take something *absolutely extraordinary* to pull me into a full-time engagement, much less a full-time W2 position... that said, I do have an entrepreneurial bent, so if you think you have the opportunity of a lifetime (such as being the first full time IT operations person for the equivalent of Facebook or Google), feel free to contact me. Emphasis on the "opportunity of a lifetime", see opening paragraph.Update, re: Space.Org, Inc. I've bootstrapped the opportunity of a lifetime into existence, so off the market in that respect, though more than happy to work with new consulting clients and advise other startups.

CurrentLead consultant and coach for career counseling and coaching service I founded to empower others to follow a career path as a self-employed consultant, as I've done. Also provide general career counseling and job search coaching, helping people apply our namesake principle to all areas of their work. Also known as “The 80/20 Rule”, the Pareto Principle specifies that you get 80% of your results from 20% of your inputs, a rule of thumb that has been found to be generally true across a broad range of situations, human and natural. How does this apply to our clients? Simple: 80% of the value anyone provide their employer comes from 20% of the work they do… imagine if there was a way people could get their employer to pay them 80% of their salary, while letting them work only 20% of the hours! Well, there is: it’s called becoming a consultant!** Not quite, but close enough. :)
