• I mentored around 70 A-level Product Design students per year, taking their project from initial concept through to final evaluation. • I presented over 20 hours of information in lessons per week on all aspects of design and engineering and lectured on sustainable consumerism to large audiences.• I provided life skills advice and support for students in my role as a tutor. Within my team I coordinated the theory areas of Plastics, Computer Aided Design (Solidworks) and Manufacture, and Design for Production and Assembly. I prepared resources to tight deadlines, which involved synthesising information to make it palatable for students, compiling research, analysis of tasks described in the exam syllabus and time planning. I gained extensive practical workshop experience with a wide variety of materials, including plastics, paper and board, woods, metals and textiles. This included setting up machines and processes with precision, and demonstrating their operation to others.

Given the brief “the use of product design to reduce the environmental impact of construction”, I researched industry trends, and created initial concepts for a product to replace air conditioning by storing heat energy in the walls of buildings. I led the design development of “OmniCare” (the advanced disabled refuge remote), including conducting stakeholder interviews, analysing the legislation and sourcing a manufacturer. I synthesised this information to produce a design which I communicated using storyboards and Solidworks. This product has been put into commercial production. I drew parts in 3D computer aided design (CAD) for an electronic product called Roomwizard and then translated the CAD model into 2D blueprints for use by the manufacturers. I developed a stand for use in freestanding situations including calculating the loading and rigidity of the final solution. The product has been successfully commercialised. (http://www.wizardwebsigns.com) I also led the design of an Interactive Material Database to provide inspiration and technical information for designers and engineers. I developed a working prototype to link physical samples with on-line databases, which was installed in the reception area of the London office.

I developed a new range of thermostatic valves with the aim of reducing the variety of components used, thereby increasing the economy of scale and simplifying maintenance procedures in the field. I drafted these proposals in 2D and 3D in AutoCAD and interrogated the designs against British Standards, calculated pressure strengths in different materials and optimised the design for sand casting.
