About Twila Moon

I am a climate and Earth scientist committed to communicating research insights to business, government, and philanthropic leaders, to drive impactful business and policy solutions that meet the urgency of the climate crisis. I am Deputy Lead Scientist and Science Communication Liaison at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), a global leader in Earth science. My research focuses on the Greenland Ice Sheet and Arctic and I specialize in uncovering connections across ice, climate, ocean, and ecosystem. My pioneering research has been published on the cover of high-impact journals such as Science and Nature, to which I have also contributed invited perspectives. My work has received extensive media coverage globally, including the BBC, Associated Press, CTV Canada, CNN, and more.I am a seasoned, sought-after speaker and media contact with the ability to connect climate science with societal impacts. I have advised business and philanthropic leaders connected, for example, with the Rocky Mountain Institute and McPherson Strategies in the US, Active Philanthropy in Germany, Bridges Fund Management in the UK, and more. My insights are featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, National Geographic, Forbes, Time, Vice, StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, and more (see: changingice.com/media-archive). In 2021, I was a presenter and expert panelist across various events for the United Nations COP26 meeting. In 2018, I presented “Embracing Ice: A Story for Action” at the TEDx event in Big Sky, MT. Dedicated to using research to inform climate policy, I testified before the U.S. Congress House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in 2019 and briefed the Senate Arctic and Ocean Caucuses in 2017. I am also a lead editor for the annual NOAA Arctic Report Card, and I spearhead efforts to improve climate knowledge exchange. For example, I lead QGreenland (a Greenland GIS data research/education tool) and PolarPASS (a polar-focused education project). I am also the Research Synthesis Lead for the Navigating the New Arctic Community Office and a Steering Group member of the Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean Science Network (GRISO). Finally, I currently serve on the U.S. Polar Research Board and previously served on the NASA Sea Level Change Team Practitioner Consultation Board. This profile is a snapshot of my recent work, publications, and public engagements.
