I am passionate about student experience and I am interested in understanding how we can help improve learning and teaching, especially at universities. I am also an experienced HCI & Interaction Design researcher who works in User Experience, Experience-Centered Design, Interaction Design, and Participatory Design. I am highly skilled in qualitative research (especially generative research) and in particular, designing and using design probes to better understand people's subjective experiences. I have taught in various universities in Australia, Denmark, and the UK, and have received various awards for teaching excellence.Good digital design and innovation is impactful. It should also be ethical and moral. Thus, my core HCI research interest is ‘people’s experiences with digital technologies’, in particular, those in underserved, marginalised or vulnerable populations. I have substantial research experience with First Nations Australians, people living with dementia, queer youths and ageing adults. This kind of research requires sensitive and participatory approaches; ones that lean towards methods that empower people in the design process, such as co-design, of which I am an expert. I have consulted for various companies and led design teams, in particular to surface innovative and desirable design opportunities through user research. I am the Director of the Apple Foundation Program at RMIT. This strategic and high-impact partnership with Apple, uses a Challenge-Based Learning approach to engage learners in a design process to create a prototype iOS app. Learners get to experience of the processes of working with others to engage with a real-world problem- understand its complexity, explore possible solutions, prototype and iterate a chosen solution, and learn the fundamentals of Apple's XCode to build an iOS mobile app.

Phd StudentUniversity Of Melbourne Jan 2006 - 2009I was a PhD student while working contractually as an Associate LecturerPhD fieldwork* Designed and carried out a 3-week long experiment to study the relationship between people’s experiences of serendipity during listening and the degree of their familiarity with the music* Conducted a highly focused 8-week long field study to study people’s experiences of digital music listening, in particular of shuffle listening in their everyday lives* Approaches used: diary studies, open-ended interviews, dice-led activities, meta-data capture and alternative modes to support data capture, e.g., mobile phone, personal blogs, etc. Data analysis using grounded approach* Conducted an exploratory investigation on the experiences of shuffle listening and digital music listening. I used netnography to collect data on people’s shuffle listening experience -

Research ScholarMicrosoft Jan 2008 - Apr 2008Cambridge, United KingdomWorked with the Socio-Digital Systems Group at the Microsoft Research Lab, Cambridge, U.K. with Professor Richard Harper. There I conceived the idea and all the desired interactions of a novel photo presentation system with a dice-led input device which was deployed in three households in the U.K. to study people’s experiences of serendipity when interacting with personal digital photos.* I was the main researcher: designed the entire approach and rationale of the study* Researched and secured the necessary hardware for the system* Worked closely with and supported by a programmer (Dr Tim Regan) to create, test and refine the system* Refined the implementation of the dice-led input device.* Conducted the field study on my own: data gathering and analysis
