Following a large merger/acquisition I was promoted to a Directorship with this fast paced and dynamic company. Hirchbach/JCT is the second largest refrigerated transport/logistics company in the United States with volumes totaling more than $1B per annum.I lead a team of Data Engineers and I am individually responsible for data acquisition and provision across a wide variety of operational and telematics systems, ETL, analytics, governance and master data management.I have chosen predominantly SaaS components to deliver on our goal of providing best in class Data Services. Some of the tools we use are Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps, Function Apps, Azure API Management Services, Azure SQL databases, Azure Snowflake instances, PowerBI (of course), DBT Cloud, Python, DB2, PostgreSQL to name a few.

The Galena Territory is a 6,500 acre resort. With 3 world class golf courses, a lake and marina and an outstanding equestrian riding center. Galena attracts over 1M visitors a year. I have been assisting GTA with business processes and systems at both the riding center and the marina. I have developed software for CRM, invoicing and tracking about the horses. I have enabled the barcoding functions of the POS system via the inventory module and I developed an eCommerce website to sell merchandise online.

As head of Product Management and R&D at Eagles Rest I led teams in development of 2 major products, all the way from concept to full scale wholesale distribution.NZ Seedbombs: this iconic kiwi product is the original "throw-n-grow" seedbomb, bringing delight to gorilla gardeners for many years now. The idea for this product originated on a trip to Japan where seedbombs were used to reclaim vegetative areas affected by war. Getting from concept to full production presented a number of local challenges and I also wanted to add my own flair, such as the first and only seedbomb to contain nutrients and the first to feature a "flat" side so that they don't roll downhill and collect in valleys and streams. Very proud to be the inventor of the original kiwi seedbomb.BinTowa: The BinTowa was born out of necessity, having been living on a farm with a very long driveway when the council released "wheelie bins" for trash collection. The BinTowa is the result of countless hours in the workshop, bending and shaping the bends and curves of the BinTowa until it was just perfect.

It is also a hands on role requiring me to use my full suite of developer skills.Assist the CIO in the strategic management and direction of all IT programs, services, policies and processes. Assist the CIO in developing organisational benchmarks to ensure that the IT department is delivering value. In the absence of the CIO, assume full departmental responsibility.

Staying with Auckland Transport, now manager of the Enterprise Information Unit; comprised of Geographic Information, Enterprise Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence, Information Management and Operational Reporting.

Promoted from BI team leader into newly created senior management role reporting directly to the CIO. Role now has 3 team leader direct reports, 2 from Business Intelligence along with the Information Management Team Leader. Total staff about 30. High level of accountability, responsible for the custodianship of all Auckland Transport information assets, including the newly established HOP card electronic ticketing system. Personal registration data, travel and ticketing data.

Create current and future state BI roadmaps gaining executive level approval. Establish a data governance council with key IT and business stakeholders to ensure data is correctly stored and managed. Implemented a metadata management system to encapsulate the findings of the data governance council, ensuring data integrity across the entire organization. Adapt the BI strategy and architecture to incorporate tools and technology that were licensed but not utilised, improving capability and providing a richer set of data presentation options to the consumer. Began a rigorous plan to provide a self service reporting environment to each of the 23 business groups in 8 months. Shifted the focus of the BI team from BAU reporting (now supported by self service) to project reporting, driving down outsource costs for project BI resources. Mentor and prepare the team for future technology; including mobile BI (Push BI, Cloud etc) and “big data” solutions such as Hadoop and mining social media data for customer analytics. Finalist in the 2012 CIO “Executive Team of the Year” awards.

Originally contracted to write complex SQL stored procedures for valuation reporting via Crystal Reports and Excel (via ADO), this role expanded to include business analysis, project management and programming responsibilities. Successfully completed a high profile application development project involving the secure transfer of private infringement data to the Ministry of Justice using encrypted XML.

As senior consultant and director of DataSys Ltd I most often work on high profile BI projects involving large entities, usually local and central government. The list includes Auckland Council, Auckland Transport, Office of the Valuer General, Ministry of Justice, Department of Internal Affairs, QV, SpeedScan, SDL and Datam. I completed the Revaluation 2011 project for the new supercity Auckland Council. Coordinated all data transfers between QV and the Office of Valuer General using WebSphere; developed new methods of data analysis using “best fit” nearest neighbor data mining models, and statistics such as coefficients of dispersal; created online thematic GIS maps using color gradients to visually show property value variations; and maintained the integrity of the data used to generate valuation notices to 550,000 customers.In late 2010 I was a senior consultant on several workstreams for the Auckland Transition Authority, the entity tasked with the formation of the Auckland “SuperCity”. I advised the workstreams with regard to processes and systems in the new organisational structures. This included evaluation of existing systems/databases and amalgamation where applicable or possible.

Continued the role of Database Analyst, and also led a team of 4 analysts. Responsible for fault tolerance and disaster recovery on 9 production SQL Servers, including security, mirroring, clustering, replication, backups and performance tuning. Maintained sole responsibility for all document and case management databases used in litigation against US tobacco companies which resulted in a 6.4 billion USD settlement for the State of Minnesota.
