About Tyler Wyka
I think, like any other college student, I dream of changing the world or at least influencing it in some positive way.Only in the past four years did I realize a tangible path to achieving this goal. I was a sophomore when I understood what it meant to be a mechanical engineering student in the nation’s capital. It was an opportunity to do good.Where my heart once aspired to pursue aerospace, I realized that my problem-solving ability, knack for scientific concepts, and people-loving personality could be much better applied to sustaining life on Earth.Around this time, I also joined the LeBlanc District Energy Systems Lab, and there was no stopping my ambition. I fell in love with energy sciences and how they related to policy. The math and physics built my perspective of the physical world, coupled with the complex interactions of policy and social systems. I learned that achieving total sustainability would require a massive, multidisciplinary effort. I needed to learn everything I could to position myself at the exact leverage point so that when it came time to effect change, I would be ready.Since then, I have taken coursework in Energy Resources Policy, Systems Thinking, and Human-Centered Design, and attended numerous conferences in the DMV area to become immersed in the current industry landscape. I have bolstered my understanding of the current built environment through internships in the utilities and construction sectors. I continue my work as a mentor and a learning assistant as a way of educating and engaging younger students.

Aeg Dmv Fellow
CurrentAs an Advanced Energy Group (AEG) fellow, I contribute to the successful execution of "Stakeholder Engagement Challenges." These challenges occur quarterly and focus on four key areas in the sustainable transition: Critical Infrastructure, Buildings, Grid Modernization, and Transportation.During these challenges, key stakeholders and leaders from government, private industry, and non-profits convene to discuss what they see as the critical obstacles to clean energy transformation and social equity. They then workshop in groups to identify what collaboration could be achieved within a 12-month period to address these obstacles. The outcome is the formation of a task force composed of volunteers from all three sectors, who come together to lead the changes they envision.AEG has been operating for 10 years in Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, the DMV, and Puerto Rico. To learn more, you can visit their website at goadvancedenergy.com.I am grateful for the opportunity and excited to have an impact in the DMV, advancing an equitable clean energy transition.
President Gw Chapter
CurrentAs a part of GW AEE, I help organize events and grow interest in the sustainable energy transition. We offer a range of opportunities including getting involved in technical projects, touring LEED certified and NET Zero Buildings, and professional development events. We also work frequently with our partner FAIECY SL in Sierra Leone helping advance climate resilient and sustainable farming techniques as well as developing climate education programming.
Research Assistant - Leblanc District Energy Systems Lab
CurrentOn Energy Systems side of the Leblanc Lab we work with Energy Management and Optimization Tools to assess the impact of novel energy technologies on Urban District Energy Systems. Ideally positioned in Washington DC to link technology development to the policies and economics that shape society. My role in the research has been to verify that our metrics for the optimization tools were relevant in the literature. I've also worked on numerous small projects and engagement events pertaining to clean energy and the sustainable transition. - Conducted a literature review to verify metrics used to evaluate resilience, reliability, vulnerability, and cost of physical and modeled district energy systems.- Researched and modeled an Agrivoltaic solar array in Aurora Solar- Engaged with GW community at sustainability fairs and events- Attended conferences to learn about current and future research in the energy transition space. - Presented progress and results monthly at group meetings

Project/Field Engineering Intern
This last summer I worked as a Project and Field Engineering Intern for Whiting Turner on the United Therapeutics Campus. Located in Silver Spring Maryland, the United Therapeutics Campus includes a portfolio of buildings constructed by Whiting Turner including the Unisphere (The Largest Net Zero Office Building in the world), a Lung Reconditioning Facility, and the most recent project GLACED. As an intern I was able to gain hands on experience in the day to day operations of the construction industry. Through intern tours I was able to see the process of creating a building from CSA (Civil, Architectural, and Structural) to MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing). I was lucky enough to be working with a wonderful team and company dedicated to ensuring quality and accuracy of installation, making the details in design documents a reality. I'm thankful to the Whiting Turner Team for being so welcoming and accommodating, and I was happy to learn about the careful and caring business practices that allowed the company to be debt free even while growing for over 100 years. Whiting Turner is a wonderful company dedicated to their employees and customers, ensuring the highest quality and safe jobsite culture.- Gained insight into the process of constructing the built environment, from permitting to installation- Performed site walks and tours of the Largest Net Zero Office Building in the world and new processing facility on the United Therapeutics Headquarters Campus in Silver Spring MD- Engaged with customers and sub contractors promoting a culture of safety, building community on the jobsite- Reviewed contract documents to ensure the proper installation technique and materials were used- Learned about the construction process from CSA through MEP into commissioning
Sytem Integrity Intern
I have officially finished my time in the SJI ignite internship program and genuinely can't be more thankful for the opportunity to work with such a supportive and caring company. This summer helped me expand all types of skills from coding in python to networking with coworkers, on top of all that this position provided some critical perspective on the utility industry, relationships between business and regulation, and the future of our energy use as a whole. I will take the lessons learned, connections made, and insights gained with me far into the future. Thank you to everyone who helped over the summer and thank you SJI for actively taking steps toward a better energy future.- Gained insight into the interaction between government regulation and private business through field walks and meeting with the NJ BPU (Board of Public Utilities)- Became immersed in the current utility landscape and steps that both private and public entities are taking toward sustainable practices- Coded Python scripts using Excel data to automate yearly leak report generation, saving company time and reducing chance of human error- Utilized ArcGIS software and field visits to monitor and make corrections to cathodic protection systems- Presented results at the end of the summer to company executives, managers, and co-workers
