I have loved history ever since I was a child. I also enjoy "ripping good yarns," as the British say. I am combining these two passions into a book ("Heroes By The Hundreds: The Saga of the USS FRANKLIN") about the USS FRANKLIN, CV-13. An Essex-class aircraft carrier during World War II, her crew is the most decorated in the history of the US Navy. Fighting in the Pacific Theater (PTO), on 19 March 1945, a single Japanese bomber dropped two bombs that penetrated her flight deck. The ship was rocked with loud explosions that could be heard below the horizon 12 miles away. Smoke and flame towered more than a thousand feet in the air! More than 800 men lost their lives.The crew's response resulted in nearly four hundred sailors receiving awards for heroism, including two Medals of Honor and 19 Navy Crosses. More than 250 other crewmembers were also recognized. There truly were "heroes by the hundreds," and their actions that day can teach us lessons in leadership and decision-making. My book will discuss some of those.There was also controversy. The captain tried to court-martial seven officers who he felt abandoned the ship without permission. He also turned more than a hundred enlisted men into outcasts by accusing them of desertion. This stigma would impact those men for the rest of their lives.
