When I was a boy of 8 or 9, I saw a story of a boy fisherman in Ghana who toiled in thenets all day but received no pay and meager scraps of food. I was outraged andembarked on a crusade to help as many of those kids as I could. I held car washes,built lemonade stands, and solicited donations from strangers. To anyone who wouldlisten, I told the story of the boy fisherman. This work snowballed into my kid-runnonprofit, “Kids Helping Kids,” which garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars forcauses similar to that of the boy fisherman. I wanted to tell the stories of kidswho—through no fault of their own—found themselves on the fringes of the world’ssocieties.
