As A Geomatics Technician my job requires me to constantly pivot on what I am doing and how to do it, a true jack of all trades as it were. Reminiscent of my time in the military as a Boom Operator on a KC-135, these two roles have prepared me to better handle dynamic environments where I perform varying tasks and need to think outside of the box to handle complex problems.My current role as a Geomatics Technician is a mix of work in the field, and in the office.From surveying where equipment is to be placed for construction of Tank Batteries in Oil and Gas utilizing high-precision survey practices, to the final as-built of said Tank Batteries using ESRI’s Survey123 application on mobile devices to capture inventory, and subsequent drone flight using quadcopter and fixed-wing drones to capture high resolution raster imagery.This raster imagery is then geotagged, and processed in ESRI’s Drone2Map software to produce a high resolution Orthomosaic.Then into Autodesk Civil 3D where the survey data is loaded into the drawing, the Orthomosaic is connected, and appropriate xref’s are referenced is where the line-work is created. Standard plot layouts and damages are the typical deliverables produced for clients.Depending on the client and workflow these deliverables are not the last products produced. Bringing the linework drafted into ArcGis Pro is the next step.Now in ArcGis, the purpose of the line-work is to visualize things inside of the ArcGis Online/Enterprise Portal, and for attribution of data.The Survey123 data is typically done for inventory purposes, but also is represented by Pneumatics information for EPA OOOO compliance. (ESG)When referencing the inventory data, correct identification of equipment, and input of specifics on each piece is important for the engineering team.Wether the purpose being new construction, retrofits, or simple inventory purposes, these differences matter to clients.Pipeline surveying for compliance with RRC shapefile submissions for T4’s is another type of linework thats surveyed and created. Pipe-locating UG lines and then connecting the points to then attribute lines and submit to RRC.Inside of the ArcGis Portal each client will have their data hosted in live, interactive layers where they are able to view the Survey123 data which includes the specifications of the devices, as well as photos of them, the linework representing the facility or pipelines, and the Orthomosaic representing the birds eye view.For the client this gives them a massive amount of data, but all organized in a helpful way
