My primary focus is on developing methods for generative large language models (LLMs) to analyze and design DNA sequences for forming nanostructures. I have shown that general purpose LLMs, like ChatGPT, are able to capture the physical rules that govern secondary structure formation (i.e. structures beyond the familiar double helix). Additionally, I am managing projects on motor-propelled DNA structures and self-propelled condensates.

I developed a theory and simulations that predict that self-propelled microscopic objects can be organized by friction patches in a similar manner to how light is modulated by lenses and prisms. I also developed an experimental system for controlling the motion of DNA structures propelled by engineered motor proteins. Both projects are advancements in creating self-contained devices for routing molecular cargo in diagnostic applications and in developing autonomous cell-sized machines.

For my thesis I engineered a biomolecular system that allows for the light-controlled organization of motor proteins and the filamentous tracks they walk on. This work is a step toward establishing the guiding principles for creating cell-sized machines that can be programmed to perform mechanical tasks.

I developed image analysis tools for fluorescent cell microscopy and gained expertise in microscopy experiments along the way. This entailed developing robust methods for determining cell orientation, segmenting cellular structures, and quantifying ratios of fluorescence signals. My analysis was largely used in determining the relationship between mechanical forces (e.g. stretching and fluid shear stress) and cellular biochemical responses, otherwise known as mechanotransduction. Mechanostransduction is important in stem cell differentiation, cancer metastasis, and cardiovascular diseases.
