About Tyler J

I grew up in Squamish, BC, surrounded by mountains and the ocean. My love of the natural world grew from there, and a further interest grew in how people relate to the natural world. This is reflected in my two bachelor's degrees, biology and psychology. I followed these interests further in my jobs, education, and volunteering, which all refined my skills to further study these interests. Whether working as a research assistant studying salmon fry, volunteering with the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, or furthering the research in the School of Biomedical Engineering, making meaningful contributions to understanding humans and the natural world is the core of my professional drive.

  • University Of Victoria
    Research Assistant
University Of Victoria Oct 2020 - Apr 2021
    Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
This position was a contract job with the WorkStudy program at the University of Victoria from the beginning of October 2020 to the end of April 2021, where I worked while completing my biology degree. In this role at the Center for Biomedical Research, with the Helbing Lab, my primary duties were assisting with literature reviews. I used reference management software and online literature databases, such as PubMed and Web of Science, to find and catalogue academic papers relevant to the lab's literature review to accomplish this task. Another aspect of my role was to standardize information from research papers given by collaborators in several different media into comprehensive Endnote files to prepare for academic publication. To improve efficiency in achieving this goal, I used my knowledge of reference management software and Microsoft Office products to independently develop a procedure to import large amounts of DOI numbers gathered by many collaborators from Excel into EndNote. After sharing this procedure in a weekly meeting, my supervisor tasked me with creating a standard operating procedure (SOP) for using my method, which is still in use. This position also required strong communication skills and collaboration. For example, we ensured we were not using duplicate papers during weekly team collaboration meetings. I exchanged updates with my bosses and coworker and shared all information relevant to the project to help the literature review run smoothly. In the end, the review was published, and I was put in the acknowledgements section for my diligent, efficient work.
  • Bc Public Service
    Adjudication Administrator
Bc Public Service Jul 2018 - Jul 2019
    Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
I was part of the first round of Affordable Childcare Benefit program hires when it launched in 2018. This position improved my oral and written communication, interpersonal communication and organization skills, discretion, computer literacy, sensitive information handling, and public communication. For example, I responded to inquiries regarding client applications' status and submissions to the affordable childcare benefit program. Responding to questions involved synthesizing information from multiple sources, such as government legislation, program policy, procedures and requirements, then translating it into plain language intelligible to clients and stakeholders. I also proactively contacted clients and stakeholders to clarify conflicting or missing information required to support the decision-making process. Moreover, I provided written and verbal correspondence of program decisions to clients and stakeholders, demonstrating cross-culture sensitivity to parents who may have difficulty understanding eligibility requirements or required services in a language other than English. I also provided teaching, training, and orientation to new employees. I volunteered to have new employees shadow me and ask questions to learn the practical skills of the job. The training I provided included how to handle difficult phone calls, how to find the information most effectively, and how to use the software system better. In 2019 I was selected to a group of adjudicators to assist the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative (CCFRI) during contract renewals. My team was responsible for updating the database of childcare companies across BC. While performing this task, I devised an SOP to improve workflow and, as a result, was put in charge of the team. Under my leadership, we completed our task two months early, and I stayed with CCFRI as an adjudicator for the remainder of my contract.
