PulseMedica is developing a medical device platform that enables safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment of various eye diseases. Our platform leverages advanced imaging technology, embedded machine learning, and laser technology to precisely diagnose, plan, and treat diseased areas within the eye. Our platform will revolutionize existing treatments for eye diseases while also unlocking novel treatment options that currently do not exist. In my role as Optics & Photonics Designer and Experimentalist, I support the product life cycle through research, requirements gathering, design, experimentation, and development. I design experiments, test plans, fixtures, and equipment as needed to support the development and qualification of optical components and systems. I perform hands-on testing and validation of optical designs, components, and performance during the development and integration of optical systems. I create detailed design specifications and selection criteria for key optical components. I work in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to integrate optical designs into end products. I lead project-oriented engineering teams to achieve specific research and development goals. I analyze experimental results and produce technical reports in support of the design and prototyping of optics, electromechanical, and optomechanical systems for ophthalmic imaging and treatment. I support relevant regulatory aspects of product development through documentation and engaging in team-based design reviews. I produce project outcomes and isolate issues to develop reports that communicate complex technical processes to internal business leaders, following policies and protocols regarding the development of detailed reports and documentation. I regularly identify and communicate risks, as well as options to mitigate said risks. I utilize Python, SolidWorks, OnShape and Zemax ray tracing software to design, perform optical simulation, and support relevant projects.
  • Faculty Of Engineering, University Of Alberta
    Graduate Research Assistant
Faculty Of Engineering, University Of Alberta May 2019 - Nov 2023
    Edmonton, Canada Area
My role as a Graduate Research Assistant was performed at the Nanophotonics Research Lab with Professor Van in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. My research focused on developing microring resonators in silicon photonics and advancing their applications in optical signal filtering using novel geometries. In this position, I conducted experimental research on nanophotonic devices on the silicon-on-insulator platform. I performed optical simulation of the performance of integrated photonic circuits using Lumerical and MATLAB and designed silicon photonic chips for fabrication, adhering to strict design rule checks (DRC) using KLayout and L-Edit. I developed new experimental setups and techniques for studying the performance of integrated silicon photonic circuits. I characterized fabricated silicon photonic devices using benchtop hardware. I investigated optical intensity, spectral, and polarization performance using fibre-based components, such as photodiodes, optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), and polarization cubes. I also investigated electro-optical performance using electrical probes and nanopositioning systems, high-frequency power supplies and oscilloscopes. I analyzed experimental data using software tools such as MATLAB and Python. Throughout my various activities in this position, I collaborated with other researchers in the NPRL lab, as well as faculty members, post-docs, and fellow graduate students in the ECE department and at the University of Calgary. I wrote and published research findings in academic journals and provided oral conference presentations. I participated in lab meetings and discussions to facilitate collaboration and safety. I mentored undergraduate students and junior graduate students involved in the lab's research projects. I wrote grant and award proposals to secure funding for current and future research endeavours. I maintained and troubleshot laboratory equipment.
  • Faculty Of Engineering, University Of Alberta
    Laboratory Research Assistant
Faculty Of Engineering, University Of Alberta May 2018 - Aug 2018
    Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
I received the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award as a Summer Student in the Nanophotonics Research Lab with Professor Van in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. In this position, I investigated optical resonator characteristics using MatLab and micro-resonator theory. I accurately simulated optical components using Lumerical MODE and FDTD simulations. In order to solve simulation and circuit design problems, I coordinated with colleagues and studied optical mirroring resonator theory, applications, and techniques. I effectively engineered optical filter characteristics to meet device specifications and designed nanophotonic circuits in K-Layout for implementation through Silicon-On-Insulator fabrication. In order to effectively run frequency-response experiments, I developed a GUI in MatLab to control lab equipment remotely. I presented my research to peers and faculty at the Dean's Research Award Poster Presentation Fall 2018.
  • University Of Alberta
    Research Assistant
University Of Alberta May 2017 - Aug 2017
    Edmonton, Canada Area
I received the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award as a Summer Student in the Davis Lab in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. In this position, I designed experimental setups to test and observe fundamental physics phenomena around silica bottle-resonators doped with erbium. In setting up the experiments I contacted and cooperated with industry vendors for support and new equipment. I used Python and Matlab software to analyze experimental data. I collaborated with experienced colleagues to draw conclusions and link our experimental data to existing theory. Throughout the summer I read and analyzed research papers from other groups working in the field of quantum communication and electromagnetic resonators to gain further understanding of our results. To summarize my research, I developed and presented a research poster at the U of A Undergraduate Summer Research Poster Session 2017.
