About Tyler Lawhead

My role as Internship Coordinator at NAU Career Development centers primarily on building and maintaining close working relationships with employers, faculty, students, and other NAU departments to bring more career opportunities to NAU students. As part of the Community Relations team, I assist in executing over 5 career fairs per year with thousands of students and hundreds of employers in attendance, in addition to assisting with other career events such as Career Coffee Corner and designing our Internship Information Sessions and various information sessions with our internship partners, resulting in further bringing experiential learning opportunities to hundreds of students. Through 1-1 appointments and classroom visits and workshops, I help to educate students on how to access experiential learning opportunities. In my previous role as Academic Director for Grasp, I was responsible for leading and supervising roughly 14 English teachers as well as the 40+ corporate and 1-1 English language learning programs that we managed. I managed various projects and programs, such as developing our Learning Management System (LMS), our ESL resource database, and our teacher operational manual to help us optimize how students and teachers interface and interact while streamlining and optimizing the financial and operational aspects of running a language school. Before working with Grasp, I worked independently as an ESL teacher and later started an online English language academy called Lights Camera Language (LCL), where I designed and managed ESL programs to facilitate connections between native and non-native English teachers and students across Latin America. With LCL, I was able to work with over 200+ students offering services such as personalized English courses, translation, and copywriting, while leading and managing a team of roughly 10 teachers. As a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant based in Ibagué, Colombia, I managed and taught 14 different technical English courses while leading programmatic development efforts for the Physical Education (PE) English program at the University of Tolima, specifically with teaching U.S PE games and facilitating comparative culture reflection exercises. I can trace my program development career back to when I worked as an Americorps member after graduating college at Workers Defense Project, where I taught ESL and helped to design the non-profits English program which empowered our members to utilize English to defend and advocate for themselves in the face of widespread discrimination and wage theft.
