Having been a multisport athlete my entire life from adolescence into the collegiate level, I have had many successes but even more drawbacks. Throughout my high school career in football, basketball, and track and field, I suffered lower back pain, sciatica in my leg, and a fractured fibula that ended my senior year season for football. This propelled me through several physical therapists, doctors, and chiropractors. Although tragic, I found that I had a great passion for the work that these professionals perform for people with the same life changing injuries I went through. I found myself trying to informally diagnose others, purely for my own enjoyment without trying to give any real medical advice of course, from the knowledge I have accrued from them. Since then, my mind has been set on enduring the challenge of entering the medical field to eventually help people the same way I was years ago. Fast forward into my years at Illinois Wesleyan University, I am continuing my athletic career in football and my studies in Biology with a Pre-med focus and Hispanic studies. These aspects of my career at IWU have continued to shape my passion for the medical field, specifically in sports. Taking on football while being a biology major has been no easy task, and I take pride in being the last biology major in my class on the football team. This shows my perseverance and desire to be different and loyalty to do the things I say I am going to do. My interest in Hispanic studies comes from my interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. Merely learning the language is not enough for me. I strive to be culturally competent so that I am able to accurately and appropriately communicate and diagnose Spanish speaking patients which continues to be a large issue among the medical field.
