In my first formal role in higher ed and career services, I am getting both breadth and depth of experience. I work with undergrads in the supply chain management major in a variety of contexts, including managing our major's internship requirement, advising student organizations, and providing basic career services such as sharing internship and job opportunities and offering resume reviews.The other half of my role is in support of our online master of supply chain management students. This group has had no prior dedicated career support, so there is a significant amount of work to be done in building programming for them and supporting the breadth of their different needs and career goals.In both of these areas, I also work closely with employers, including building up new employer partnerships and helping ensure that our closest partners get the engagement they need with our top students.

I wrote occasional entries for Eddy's online HR encyclopedia. I contributed 10 articles, including on such topics as employer information sessions, career pages, networking, co-ops, and boomerang employees. This was a great way to maintain my HR chops, despite my transition out of corporate HR and into higher education!

My final rotation was with the team of HR Business Partners supporting USAA's life insurance, retirement income and annuities, and health insurance divisions. I was the HR representative in a working group building out improved career development and career pathing resources and systems for employees. I also helped with facilitation of the interview process for our Manager Candidate School, organization design sessions for the business, and additional talent strategy efforts, among other work.

My second rotation was with the People Insights team, putting my passion for using data to solve people and organizational problems to good use. My primary projects included development and delivery of Board scorecard metrics and Tableau dashboards that enable hundreds of business leaders and HR professionals to better manage their talent, including looking at a variety of employee skills, learning, and development metrics.

In my first Career Development Program rotation, I engaged in a variety of talent management-related projects. This included building out new workforce planning processes, acting as project manager for a team improving retention, succession and critical role-related processes, and assisting in preparations for the USAA Executive Council's end-of-year talent review. I also took the opportunity at the end of this rotation to become a certified project manager (CPM).

I worked with Dr. Chris Hartwell in the Masters of Human Resources department at USU to research applicant conversion rates and factors that tend to make candidates drop out of the job application process, specifically in STEM careers. We submitted a paper looking at applicant attrition rates at a tech company. In another project, I worked with Dr. Mike Ulrich and other professors in the MHR department to develop a comprehensive case study for use in the program's HR research and analytics courses. This included building a conceptual framework for improved attraction and retention of technical talent that we worked from to create an effective example case for student analysis and practice.

I interned with the "HR4HR" business partner team between the two years of my masters program, and was exposed to many exciting projects and areas of HR. I developed an onboarding program for new HR business partners, including a structure meant to sustain the process long-term and allow more time for new hires to job shadow and train to be ready to support their assigned business executives. I also helped prepare for and facilitate a quarterly talent review for the HR function, which included working with the top HR leadership of the company on their succession plans and developing their high potential talent.

On our Success team, I had the opportunity to be a part of helping "set people free to do great work" through our growing emphasis on HR strategy. My impact on this came through a revision of our business review process. I adjusted this process to more effectively guide clients through using the software to address their operational tasks in an effort to free up their time for more strategic pursuits, and to allow customer success managers to share resources with those clients to guide their strategic thinking. We saw great success with the new process, including an over 90% satisfaction rating on the approximately 300 reviews we had held as a team by the time I left Bamboo.

On the Implementation team, I helped make it possible for new clients to focus on people (instead of paperwork and spreadsheets) by integrating their data and helping them understand how to best make HR software work for them! It was a fantastic opportunity for me to become an expert in HR software and learn best practices for automating processes so HR professionals can take a more strategic, people-centered role.

In this part-time internship, I primarily assisted with on-boarding processes and online job site and social media sourcing. It served as a great first opportunity for me to experience some of the basic functions of HR. The experience I gained on the recruiting side was valuable as well, as I was able to become familiar with job sites from the employer angle, as well as effective usage of Facebook in finding candidates for hire.

I was a research assistant to Dean Ben Ogles of the School of Family, Home and Social Sciences at BYU, performing sport psychology research. I participated in several projects, including developing and carrying one out through most of the data analysis and writing process. I presented some of those results at the 2015 Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) Southwest Regional Conference at the University of Utah.Throughout this time, I also worked or volunteered for three other professors on various research projects: Dr. Rick Miller in the School of Family Life, and Doctors Michael Lambert and Jared Warren of the Clinical Psychology program. Most of this work involved organizing and auditing data on therapy outcomes for children and adolescents, as well as participating in the writing and revising of academic papers on those topics.

I was an office assistant at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship. I worked directly under Dr. Kristian Heal, who is the director of the Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts, a division of the Maxwell Institute. At the time that I left the Institute, most of my efforts were spent preparing a comprehensive document on footnotes included in previous and current editions of the Book of Mormon, a book of scripture for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area

I interned as a counselor for the Summer Treatment Program for Adolescents at Florida International University's Center for Children and Families, directed by Dr. William Pelham, a well-known ADHD researcher. I worked with adolescents with ADHD in a two-month, intensive, evidence-based program where we helped teach a number of adolescents academic, interpersonal, and organizational skills to help improve their outcomes. The results of the program are used every year in research conducted by Dr. Pelham and his colleagues, so it was a fantastic opportunity for me to develop greater aptitude in research and clinical work, as well as to network with some well-known names in the field.

As a courier and counselor at Heritage School, I built relationships with and helped supervise homes of at-risk adolescents, ages 12-17, in addition to helping with transportation and other various needs of the center. My work there gave me many opportunities to interact with and help adolescents suffering from various mental and emotional disorders, including depression, ADHD, and ODD.

Orem, Ut

Supervision of individuals (currently all 20 years of age or younger) who have been diagnosed with mental or developmental disabilities. I spent a few hours every week with these people to help them learn skills necessary to succeed in their community.
