Starting in graduate school, I wanted "to not show enzymes as black boxes," but to know what they were doing, and how they were doing it. I joined the lab of Prof. Chris Whitman, where I continued his work on a family of proteins. I worked with enzymes that were implicated in making antibiotics and a group of enzymes that broke down halogenated aromatic compounds, which are persistent pollutants. Over the course of my work, I grew to enjoy the detective work of the functional assignment of proteins. My developed interest in protein families and functional annotation naturally landed me in the lab of Prof. John Gerlt for my postdoctoral research. We used sequence similarity networks to identify proteins that are significant to the medical and scientific community but without functional annotation, and genome neighborhood networks to find proteins that are co-occurrent, which suggests at a metabolic pathway. At Providence College, I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. My roles are to teach General Chemistry and Biochemistry, in the lecture and lab. My research will focus primarily on bacterial proteins and genomes, to study 1) enzymes from bacteria that are important to the human gut microbiome, and/or 2) enzymes that catalyze interesting reactions on important biological molecules.
