I am on an extraordinary journey as a Ph.D. Candidate, having commenced my path as an Undergraduate to Graduate Program (UtGP) Fellow at Florida International University (FIU). My passion lies in the intricate world of marine science, with a focus on the ecology, genetics, and cell biology of coral reef ecosystems and symbiotic organisms.At the heart of my academic voyage is the Integrative Marine Genomics of Symbiosis (IMaGeS) Laboratory, a hub of innovation where we explore the complexities of marine symbiosis. Here, we conduct cutting-edge research to unlock the secrets of how diverse organisms collaborate and thrive in some of the world's most fragile ecosystems.My work extends from the lab to the depths of the ocean. I've had the privilege of participating in field research at the iconic Aquarius Reef Base, an underwater research lab, where we dive into the heart of coral reef systems. These real-world experiences enable me to witness the challenges and opportunities of marine science up close.My academic pursuits are fueled by a commitment to advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems and the symbiotic relationships that sustain them. I am proud to have served as a Deckhand for Sea Shepherd Global, where I dedicated my skills in diving, small boat operations, and maritime expertise to actively protect and preserve our world's precious oceans.Sea Shepherd's mission to defend marine life and habitats through direct action, advocacy, and education resonated with my deep passion for environmental conservation. As a deckhand, I was on the front lines of this critical mission.My role encompassed a wide range of responsibilities, from assisting with ship navigation and seamanship to participating in at-sea campaigns aimed at confronting illegal fishing, marine pollution, and other threats to the marine ecosystem. I also played a crucial role in small boat operations, ensuring the safety and success of missions in some of the world's most challenging and remote marine environments.My time with Sea Shepherd allowed me to witness firsthand the urgency of the challenges our oceans face and the profound impact that dedicated individuals and organizations can have on protecting our planet. As the Director and CEO of Send It 4 The Sea, I had the privilege of leading a dynamic 501c3 non-profit organization based in the vibrant coastal community of Miami, Florida. Our mission was multi-faceted, encompassing awareness, community engagement, conservation, and adventure education, all in the name of protecting our beloved oceans.Our organization's work was driven by a passionate team and community volunteers. We leveraged the power of social media to raise awareness on critical coastal issues, partnered with local governments to advocate for conservation efforts, organized impactful clean-up events, promoted mangrove restoration initiatives, and delivered adventure education experiences.One of the highlights of my tenure at Send It 4 The Sea was leading a record-breaking clean-up event in Cutler Bay, where our dedicated team and an average of 100 community members collected a staggering 5 tonnes of garbage in a single day. In total, we removed a remarkable 15,000 pounds of trash from our beautiful coastal areas.During my time as CEO, I mentored and empowered four high school interns, providing them with hands-on experience and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in our community.
