After serving as Sales Manager at XEC, I was promoted into the position of Vice President of Sales when Firelake purchased XEC’s Controls Division in 2014. My objective in this position was to continue growing the Controls Division, and I accepted greater managerial and executive responsibilities. In addition to overseeing business development, sales, and operations, I supervised 3 managerial team members, including the Engineering Manager, the Senior Project Manager, and the Field Operations Manager. Ultimately, I had worked from Technician up to Vice President as the company changed owners three times. Each step prepared me to be the well-rounded automation expert that I am today.

When XEC purchased P1 Group’s Controls Division in 2010, I became part of the XEC team. I used this opportunity to expand my expertise and to continue preparing myself to realize my long-term goal of being the owner of an automation company. What I had learned in the classroom when I obtained my business degree supported my work as the Sales Manager at XEC, where I was solely responsible for all business development, marketing, and sales. The learning curve was steep, but it was a welcome challenge for me since it gave me the chance to pair my technical expertise with my talent for connecting and communicating with clients.

When I started as a Controls Technician at US Electrical—which merged with P1 Group in 2007—I knew that I was taking my first steps toward eventually owning an automation company. I wanted to put my technical degree in electronics and computer technology to work so that I could have a firsthand, comprehensive understanding of the business. Understanding the sales side of business was important to me, and it was during this time that I also began to pursue a degree in business. As a Controls Technician, I was responsible for the installation, technical checkout, and commissioning of temperature controls. Later, as a Controls Engineer and Project Manager, my responsibility load increased to include turn-key projects, including:● Creating control drawings● Generating submittals● Coordinating subcontractors● Developing software and graphics● Overseeing technical checkout● Managing commissions● Training others to use what we had installed for them.
