Tyler Hartman Derry received his BFA in Dance from the Department of Theatre and Dance at Ball State University. He grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and received his training at Style Dance Academy. During his time at Ball State, Tyler was a company member with Ball State Dance Theatre. While with the company he performed in seven main stage productions including The Nutcracker, BSDT: On Tour and Design + Dance. He has choreographed works seen in student projects such as Boundless Energy and XV:Fifteen. During his time in the Department of Theatre and Dance, Tyler also performed in the musical 42nd Street and was the assistant choreographer in their production of Next to Normal. Tyler has studied with River North Dance Chicago, Chicago Dance, American Dance Centre of Kansas City, and Common Thread Modern Dance Company. He has also attended master classes with Nan Girodano, David Dorfman, Alex Springer, Xan Burley, Nick Pupillo, and Princess Grace Award winner Sidra Bell. Tyler is skilled in modern, jazz, musical theatre, ballet, and contemporary dance technique. His movement vocabulary is stylized, athletic, and is influenced by his wide array of training. He is currently a technique instructor at Style Dance Academy in Franklin, IN and has been choreographing national award winning solos, duets, trios, groups, and productions for all ages. Since graduating from undergrad in the spring of 2015 Tyler has been busy performing and choreographing. Some of his favorite shows that he's performed has been Footloose (Legacy Theatre), Mary Poppins (Indianapolis Civic Theatre), Mamma Mia! (Indianapolis Civic Theatre), and most recently, playing the role of "Drosselmeier" in The Nutcracker with NBC's World of Dance finalists Expressenz Dance Center.​In addition to his performance resume, he has been equally as busy choreographing for local professional and educational theatre companies. Some of those include The Fantasticks (Actors Theatre of Indiana), and his ongoing partnership with Greensburg Community High Schools theatre department on productions of Footloose, School of Rock, Disney's Freaky Friday and Beauty and the Beast, and most recently Grease! Currently, Tyler is teaching at Style Dance Academy and attending classes at Indiana University Bloomington at the O’Neill School earning his Masters of Arts in Arts Administration. In addition to his studies, he also works as a fundraising and donor development fellow with IU Auditorium connecting art to audiences.
