As a customer support technician, I assisted customers in connecting their home computer systems to the internet while performing backend support tasks in a Unix environment. Ad hoc C programs and shell scripts were written to automate tasks such as POP3 mailbox clean out using sockets. The most important skill learned was clear communication of technical concepts to those with little to no technical background.
