    I was elated to serve as an Undergraduate Research Assistant part of the Summer Program in Diabetes and Obesity Research at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. This clinical research experience introduced me to statistical genetics, SQL, and most impactful, diabetes. My preceptor, Dr.Richard Watanabe targeted this study to test genetic variants in GCK and GCKR for association with Glucose Effectiveness at Zero Insulin in Mexican-American Communities. During this research, I was able to utilize likelihood ratio testing frameworks and SOLAR software to test for association analysis. The research concluded that genetic variation in GCKR alters glucose uptake in the liver that may alter substrate flow to enhance hepatic steatosis and the development of hepatic insulin resistance that contributes to risk for type 2 diabetes.
