Software Development ManagerAmazon Aug 2020 - Oct 2023Seattle, Wa, UsI’m currently building out Amazon Store's Chaos Engineering organization and programs for the retail websites (www.amazon.*).I manage teams of engineers, technical program managers, and engineering managers. My team satisfaction scores (manager satisfaction, job satisfaction, etc.) regularly score in the top 25% of managers at Amazon. I'm actively responsible for multiple programs that run on every single one of our "Tier-1" and "Tier-2" services, and I grew these programs from scratch as the founding engineer on the team. I later grew into a managerial role in the same organization. Our team creates and operates tooling that performs a wide array of provocative fault injection experiments on the production retail websites. It revolutionized how Amazon Stores does "peak readiness efforts", and continues to evolve the company's resiliency posture. It's been so successful that Amazon Stores does not run peak events anymore unless my team is involved and empirically proves the readiness of the retail websites before each event. Our programs also help train our best-in-class incident commanders/call leaders for real incidents through live simulations. The tooling my teams and I created scale across program complexity and technical complexity. The programs impact thousands of teams and services at Amazon every year. The tooling runs on 300k+ ECS tasks managed by a multi-regional control plane w/ sub-15 second consistency for load generation. Other challenges include traffic shaping for thousands of retail website services and multi-layered defense-in-depth safeguards to control the risk profile of chaos engineering tooling in production environments. We are a technically fearless team that has a multi-year track record of tackling the issues that no one else is wiling to touch until they're fully automated & solved problems that run as "business as usual" efforts in the background. -
Software Development EngineerAmazon May 2017 - Aug 2020Seattle, Wa, UsFounding engineer on a new chaos engineering team in NYC. I built and launched a new team from scratch while delivering Amazon retail's first site wide, prime day scale "gamedays" used to empirically prove Amazon's resilience posture.Prior to moving to NYC, I worked in Seattle on a couple of backend Java services fronted by AngularJS and Ruby for internal websites. We owned a variety of tooling that supported the Consumer Reliability Engineering organization. This included most tooling you'd expect to see in a "control room" for large scale events. -

Software Engineering InternGe Aviation May 2014 - Aug 2014Cincinnati, Oh, UsDepartment: Navigation and Guidance – Passenger SystemsCore Project: Boeing 737 Flight Management System Update 11My main responsibility was to serve as the "Critique Lead" to verify that the low level requirement review process was implemented and documented correctly. I worked with every component team to ensure each review met FAA standards for DO-178B certification. Additionally, I completely revamped the documentation used to support the critique reviews by slimming down reports from 1000+ pages to roughly 10 pages.Further responsibilities included supporting the high level requirement verification and testing team, supporting the formal testing lab, and providing the technical leads and project managers with regularly updated metrics used to track program progress. -
Mechanical Engineering InternGe Aviation Aug 2013 - Dec 2013Cincinnati, Oh, UsDepartment: New Product Integration – Mechanical AnalysisCore Projects:(1) Internal Productivity Tools Software Development(2) Automated Fiber Placement Program and Carbon Fiber Panel RedesignOne of my main responsibilities was to serve as the sole developer for an image processing tool used to lend accuracy to a process fraught with user error. My other main responsibility was to assist with the mechanical analysis and re-design of an optimized carbon fiber structure. Along with one other full time engineer, we were able to successfully increase the buckling strength by ~120% and decreased the weight by ~10%.Additional work included assisting technical leads with the overall planning, development, debugging, and releasing of a department wide productivity tools software package used to increase efficiency of mechanical stress analysts.During my time here, I had the pleasure of working with a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team to develop powerful productivity tools and to redesign carbon fiber panels that are now in production for thousands of aircraft.Lastly, I was recognized and awarded for “demonstrating intelligence and problem-solving skills beyond his years” by my technical leads and assignment manager.
