Finance Intern

The Ohio Department Of Commerce

Columbus, Ohio Area

The Ohio Department of Commerce's function is to assist Ohio businesses and citizens to operate lawfully and effectively. They provide a number of services to financial institutions, regulate buildings and machinery, and return unclaimed funds to their rightful owners, to name a few. As an intern I was able to shadow not only officers and executives within the department, but of those state departments closely affiliated. For the past two summers (as well as the fall when I am in classes) I have been given opportunities through various projects to understand the roles and tasks of every employee in the department, the structure and processes of the public sector, and the various issues they face by interacting with other organizations and companies. I use Excel daily to manage and oversee state funds, as well as to predict revenues and expenses in upcoming months for newly created or recently changed funds. I learned a great deal throughout the early parts of my first summer, that I am now have the knowledge and experience to give my own opinions and suggestions on financial decisions to those that I reported to. Most recently I have worked to prepare the department's biannual budget for the 2020-21 fiscal years. I continue to learn more about budgeting and the obstacles our CFO faces daily.

Metro Columbus Intern

Columbus, Ohio Area

Young Life is a nonprofit christian organization who's mission is to introduce middle school, high school, and college students to Jesus Christ and to help them grow in their faith. Working largely as an event coordinator, I organized 12 social and outreach events in Cincinnati and Columbus geared towards connecting incoming college freshmen with Young Life at colleges they would be attending in the fall, mainly The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College. I collaborated with my coworkers and created a database that effectively connected hundreds of college freshmen to the universities they would be attending across the midwest. I oversaw 20 volunteer leaders in the area and was given responsibility to manage them to help organize these events. As part of my event organizing, I oversaw partnerships with other organizations, including one with Monster Energy who sponsored 2 of our social events at Ohio State which saw incredible turnouts, and received rave reviews. Aside from the event planning, I also held a financial organization role where I created a professional method for tracking and reimbursing event expenses, as well as analyze potential equipment investments for events and operations.
