From 6 april to 23trd July 2011From preparatory sketches to contemporary interpretations, from its use by the New Typographers of the 1920s up to the cult use made of it by artists such as Edward Ruscha and Barbara Kruger, the history of Futura resembles a saga. As Etienne Robial notes, paraphrasing Kurt Schwitters: ‘We can consider, upon reading and seeing this history, that, in certain conditions, a typeface is a work of art.’ Where is this monument, one of the most famous typographical characters of the 20th century, at today? This exhibition participates in answering this question, enhancing each fragment of the present by appropriate lighting from the past. We can hence discover the Futura imagined by its creator, Paul Renner, in 1924, the Futura of the present day in multiple digital versions, or redesigned for the visual identity of major firms or institutions. We can appreciate the way in which it was associated with the Modern Movement in the 1930s, and how it contributed to the most innovative graphic design research at the beginning of the 21st century.
