Bathing/showering patients, cleaning up soiled patients and beds, walking patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway, re-positioning patients in bed, assisting them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed), helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches, preparing patients for meals, feeding patients, filling water pitchers, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms for new admissions, transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units, assisting with post-life physical care. Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, emptying urine collection bags and measuring the urine, as well as emptying and measuring the fluid from drains, testing blood sugars by finger stick , advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.

This student nurse internship allows students to provide direct patient care with the guidance of a trained preceptor and attend educational sessions. During this 10-week internship, basic nursing skills, critical thinking, prioritization, and independence within the nursing role were greatly challenged and improved upon.
