The DC Systems Engineer at Koeberg Power Station is responsible for the on-going performance capability of all the DC systems on-site. This includes plant inverters, rectifiers, batteries and UPS units ranging up to 50 kVA. The System Engineers are required to be “recognized experts” on the performance and capabilities of their systems. To fulfill this, they should be continuously aware of the system condition and performance and are responsible for the resolution of all engineering problems related to the condition and/or performance of their systems, proposals of changes to the design base of their systems, and the preparation and updating of the Life of Plant Plans of their systems.

The Transformer System Engineer at Koeberg Power Station is responsible for the on-going performance capability of all the transformers on-site. The System Engineers are required to be “recognised experts” on the performance and capabilities of their systems. Practical work at Electrical Maintenance ServicesElectrical Maintenance Services are responsible for the repair and maintenance of all electrical equipment at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. These equipment includes:– 410, 375 and 60MW power transformers– 900MW generators and 1 - 4.6 MW diesel generators– 24kV, 6.6kV and 380V switchgear – Motors and pumps (up to 6.6kV)– 30V, 48V, 125V and 220V batteries, inverters and chargersThis secondment included being hand-on involved in the maintenance of all of the aforementioned equipment.

External Events Review InitiativeIn light of the lessons learnt from the Fukushima nuclear accident on 11 March 2011, Eskom has undertaken a safety reassessment of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which focused on external hazards which could have an impact on Koeberg Power Station. Safety reassessment has been documented, which summarises the methodology and main findings of assessments of extreme natural phenomena and combinations of external events relevant to the Koeberg Power Station site. I have completed and assisted various safety reassessments that focussed on external hazards and combinations thereof. These hazards include fire, explosions, solar flares, tsunamis, seismic events, EMP and cyber-attacks. The safety reassessments also included developing strategies to mitigate or eliminate any damage that resulted from the external hazards such as loss of off-site power, damage or loss of critical equipment and ultimately ensuring the safety of the Koeberg’s reactors. This included electrical plug and play, using emergency diesel generators, to ensure power is available to ensure the safety of the personnel and Koeberg’s reactors.

KIT upgrade project KIT is the computer and data processing system at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. The function of the KIT system is to acquire, process and display live plant data which is used by Plant Operators, Engineers, Maintainers, and Managers. KIT has a Human Machine Interface (HMI) for performing certain plant operations. The project was initiated due to foreseen unavailability of spares and the system high failure rate.The project entailed replacing various components such as processor modules, servers, controllers, DPS monitors, power supplies and I/O modules.
