It was once said that, “It is a mistake to think that moving fast is the same as actually going somewhere.” As I look back on my career, there is no doubt that one of the things I have enjoyed most is working in dynamic, fast-paced and ever-changing environments. From my service with the Air Force to leading complex technology projects as a professional, I prefer to be in situations where I am moving quickly to deliver time-sensitive initiatives. In fact, my mood is better when at the end of the day I say to myself, “where did the time go today?”.Moving fast on the wrong initiatives, however, is an exercise in futility. Recognizing this, I take the time to consult directly with my clients to understand their needs/pain points, collaboratively brainstorm innovative solutions, socialize/sell ideas to leadership teams and build thoughtful implementation plans. I immerse myself completely in stakeholder interviews, data and materials to pinpoint issues, which enables rapid acceleration towards the right solution. Delivering solutions quickly to clients is only possible with an engaged and motivated team around me. There is a point in every project where the work gets difficult, and it is the team that pulls the initiative to the finish line. Building trusting relationships with my co-workers is the key to overcoming challenges, staying the course and ultimately delivering results.
